Went to the oral/facial pain clinic and the nuero determined that Iam not getting relief from gabapentin and I should wean off it. I was on 400mg 3x a day for about 2 to 3 months. He told me I could stop cold turkey without any side effects but gave me a schedule for weaning off it. I am to cut 100 mg per day for 3 days and 100mg additional every 3 days until I get to 300mg 3x a day. At that point I should take 300mg every 3 days. I don't even know what to do after I am taking it every 3 days. It doesn't seem logical that I should wean slowly at the beginning by cutting only 100mg every 3 days and then when I am on 300mg 3x a day to cut so drastically. I could use some advice from anyone who has weaned off gabapentin. I have read some scary things on the internet about the reactions people have had when they weaned of it. I know that this is the best place to get an answer. I can't ask the nuero because I only see him once a month at the clinic and won't see him again until August. Any advice will be greatly appreciated.
Besides here - the safest place to get info on SAFE weaning off - is your local pharmacist -- they are the med guru's!
Very under-utilized resource! They are the "druggist" and spend many many years in college learning this stuff.
Whenever I have had to wean meds/ tirate up or down on meds for my son's condition - I got tired of waiting for nurse call backs and doctor appts.... Pharmacist are a captive audience!
I always ask my pharmacist questions but I am embarrassed to keep asking him so much. I guess I should ask him,
