I had the MVD surgery in 2010. It was a good decision for me because I was in horrible pain most of the time and i was taking a large amount of medication. I can live with TN now but I still take a small amount of tegretol because I still have the stings and twinges in the areas where my TN pain was , which, was above my lip. Then about 7 months after my surgery TN started coming in the other side of my lip.
Over all, the surgery was not that bad, 2 1/2 days in the hospital for me and a week later I was moving about good. I do wish I would have tried the rhyztomy procedure first, it is less evasive, and I have read of so many that have had good results from it and that are no longer taking medication, plus I do know of 3 people who have had it done and one that it lasted almost 30 years for her. Good luck to you,
Linda
Brian, does your MRI show a compression on the trigeminal nerve? Does your pain feel like electric shocks? If you answer yes to both those questions, an MVD is something worth considering.
I had what I consider successful MVD in Oct.
Could not take the meds anymore
