Sooo this Thursday is my big day with having MVD surgery .. however I'm terrified that they're going to open me up and not find what was/is causing all the pain ... My neurosurgeon said he can just cut the nerve - but from what I've read that's only to be done in the most severe cases - can that cause the sagging/droopy face ?? I asked my doc - he said no .. but i've also read the nerve can just be pinched or reset .- any thoughts or input on this ???? please - I need my mind eased a bit lol i'm a nervous wreck !!
I thought the same thing before my MVD.
They only found a blood vessel near the nerve during the MRI.
I thought the exact same thing before my surgery.
They found plenty during the surgery and I bet you they find what is causing your pain as well.
Wow! I have the same fears. I am trying to schedule my surgery for December. I will know more after Wednesday. I too am sick of the meds and want a permanent fix if it is possible. But like you I thought what if they go into my skull and find nothing wrong or at least not where they are looking. But I think Rick is right…I am sure they will find the problem and you will be better for it. I had a neighbor who had the surgery in May and the next day she was sitting up on the couch talking to several of us and seemed fine. She didn’t have a lot of headaches or pain. She has lost over 20 pounds already and she is doing great with the exception of some numbness which they will come back within 6 months to a year. God Bless!
Hi Julia,
Seems like their are alot of us that had that same fear before surgery. I had two MRI’s and ofcourse it didn’t show any compression. The neurosurgeon said from my history he was sure I had compression. He was right, two arteries and two veins. I told him if he didn’t find anything, I didn’t want the nerve cut. He said the nerve could be roughed up and sometimes that helped. Since he found compression then it didn’t become an issue.
Good luck with your MVD.
Connie
thanks for all the replies ! yup i had two MRI’s both of them came back fine … I too am not a fan of the whole cutting the nerve idea … I am all for that whole roughing it up a bit though … I also thank everyone for the good luck wishes !!
Hi, Julia
I had MVD surgery on Aug 30th of this year. All that my MRI showed was the possibility of a blood vessel touching the trigeminal nerve, but , I had “All” the symptoms of typical TN. I had exactly the same thoughts has you are having even right before I went into surgery. I knew, deep down, something was happening there and I decided I had to trust my DR. (surgeon) and sure enough it was just one area where the blood vessel was touching the nerve and had the nerve very irritated. He said it was so easy to fix. His nurse told me I wasn’t in surgery not quite 2 hours. I said all this pain and it was that easy to fix. She said it happens so many times that way and the blood vessel is barely touching in one spot but can cause just has much pain.
Good Luck Thursday, I will be praying for you. Just think positive and how wonderful it will be to be pain free.
So for , I have not had one pain, it is so…worth it. If I can help with any questions just let me know.
Hi Julia,
I wish you the best. I would tell my doctor that I don’t want the nerve cut. I’ve read too much about that. I hope he finds something causing it. I had a negative MRI but the doctor found a vein compression. Please let us know how you are doing. I’m praying for you.
