MVD Question

Having My MVD done next Tuesday Need prayers. I also have a questions for anyone who had an MVD how long was your surgery my doctor said he does not give time frams he says it takes as long as it takes he said he does not want to worry a family if it goes over a certain time but my family wants some sort of estimate so they do not freak out when it takes a long time

Kathy. I will be thinking and praying for you. I had my MVD in September and was in a total of 4 hours. Mind you my Neuro did not find the artery on the Trigeminal nerve so she had to search for the reason of my pain and she located a large vein which was on the nerve. She then did the same procedure and it has been wonderful.

It is a big worry having brain surgery but if you have faith friendship and we all pray and pull you will be fine. I was in on a Wenesday and home on the Friday. Mind you recuperation is longer but having that horrific pain gone is truly a blessing

Prayers and good wishes go with you

Kathy, read your update and wanted to offer my support & prayers. I am a big believer in power of prayer. Haven’t been on site in awhile I have been a member for 4 yrs. I use trileptal 1200-1500 daily to control pain. Had to go on long term disability in 2012 & l leave my job. I do a lot of volunteer work with the sick & elderly now I will prayer for u & your successful surgery. God bless u. Jim

My surgery was 6 hrs.(shoulda been 3 )But my nerve was stuck all along the bloodvessle i woke up as i was bein wheeled down the hall and asked " are we going now" the nurse replied "oh honey we are DONE"!! lol i had NO surgery problem what so ever, but i slept the 4 days i was in the hosp and could only wake up long enough to give the thumbs up sign to visitors and then fell back to sleep. I came home and went to bed and slept another 3 days. Only waking to use the bathroom. I didnt eat for a full week in and out of the hosp, and i lost 20 lbs. ( that was a GOOD thing)

My successful MVD was in October 2013. Dr. Ken Casey was my surgeon and I think my surgery was about 4 hours give or take. I had two arteries compressing the nerve (one was a little more complicated to move). I had no complications and honestly, the recovery was easier than I had expected. The first 24 hours for me after surgery was the worst as I felt nauseous non-stop and dry heaved all the time (effects from anesthesia). The pain meds they gave me and working in regular Tylenol in between by the time I was out of the hospital (two nights in the hospital) managed the surgery pain quite well. I've not had my TN pain since surgery more than a year ago. Prayers for you :)!

Mine took about four hours. Theyfound four-five veins that were all tangled up right under the actual surgery site, so, I know it would have been shorter had they not had to work out that mess.
The first day and a half after, I had a very hard time with nausea from the anesthetic, but, after that it was smooth sailing. After three weeks I returned to work half days, for three days a week.
That was six months ago, I consider the surgery a success.
The best of luck to you!

4 weeks post OP doing good get a little off balance once in a while still have some feeling of fullness in ear but it is all getting better I tire really easy I think I might be ready to start driving I have not driven because I had the feeling of fogginess pressure of of it might be from the medications. I just started weaning off my dilantin doc has me a on a 9 week schedule and then I will be off the Dilantin and then I should know if the surgery worked then I get to wean off the Gabapentin Yay I hope to be pain free the doc said he found a dramatic compression not sure what that means exactly but I will ask him onmy next visit

Please keep us posted!!!

Will be praying for you. I am thinking of having MVD too. Been dealing with the pain of TN for more than 10 years. Can anyone out there recommend a good Dr. In or close to New Jersey? Hope your surgery goes well.

I think it ranges anywhere from 3-6 hrs, mine was closer to 4 or 5.
He will probably send nurses out to update your family in your status as things progress,

OSOBUCKS1, that would be great! Good luck and keep me posted, thanks.

Mine was about 2 hours. : )

How did your surgery go? I just now saw your post. I have had MVD done twice. First time lasted for 23 years. Last time did not work. I hope you have great success and will be pain free.

Thanks for the feedback. I read that you are going to give Dr. Lee a try. How long do you have to wait to get an appt. for surgery? I'm looking forward to hear more about your experience at U. Penn.

Carol, I would recommend Dr. Lee. He is patient, doesn't rush you out of the office, and is willing to answer questions and surgical options.

My surgery was almost 5 hrs. It will be a long day for everyone. Rest and focus on a positive outcome

It has been 6 weeks since I had my surgery I am feeling good and have been pain free, I still have some fullness in my ear still get off balance once in a while and still get tired easy all of that is supposed to go away in time. I am back to driving YAY! Saw my neurosurgeon for the last time. My Neurologist is weaning me off my meds another 7 weeks and I should be off of the first one, that should give a good idea if the surgery was a success I am praying I will be 100% pain free.

I would like to thank everyone again who donated to my gofundeme page and for all the prayers and well wishes.

Thanks for posting this, I was wondering myself as I am having an MVD on April 7.

Good Luck with your MVD the first two days are rough but it gets better and better each day I was surprised at how much pain i was in not from the TN but from the surgery in general when I first woke up I do not know why I was not expecting that It only lasted a couple of days after surgery when you get home stretch your neck and stool softeners a must my doctor perscribed them have someone at home to help you I had friends how made meals and froze them for me I also bought a shower chair it was really handy because you are dizzy hand held shower head so when you cannot wash your hair I also bought a wedge pillow which help I think Prayers and for a speedy recovery

Im glad you are back!
