Had a MVD in Feb (successful to TN- worth it! Even with frustrating, but not life threatening, side effects). What are the general chances of needing another in one's life? I have classic TN.
I read 10% need one in the 1st year, if its unsuccesful. Then every year a 3.5 chance rises to each person needing one. I've also heard many other things.
In the published work of Dr Peter Janetta's surgical team, with over 1,000 MVD case reports, the initial statistics of success are about 95% in Type I (typical) TN. After 12 years approximately 70% of MVD patients are still pain free. Statistics are generally not as good for ATN (Type 2 or "Atypical"), and many neurosurgeons discourage use of either MVD or any of the destructive procedures in patients for whom the initial pain presentation is of Type 2 or ATN. Several of Janetta's papers are available in full text online. Please run a google search for +Janetta +MVD +"New England Journal of Medicine". That search should call up at least one of the papers in the top 20 hits. Likewise run a search on Janetta or MVD in our search window above, and scan some of the many results you will get back...
Thank you! This is great info. I'm sorry I took so long to reply- I have two major disc herniations + surgeries for each since my MVD. Curious on why my back was fine pre MVD, and herniated after. Perhaps I'm alone on this one!
