brand new to this, so far I have only been aking percocet. got a rx today for gabapentin? anyone know anything about this?
was suppose to start it tonight, but having brain mri tomrrow and i am very nervous that the noise of the mri will trigger the ice pick stabs!??? I am very sesitive to noise and touch on my left cheek, jaw and ear...it will lead to the tingling, then to the burning and then to the stabs...how do i manage an hour in mri when i can't be in the same room with a tv set on or someone eating doritos?
Can you have somebody drive you so that you can take 1/2 or a whole pain pill for MRI
Ask for earplugs
I don't remember the vibration making my pain worse but we are all different
I tried to take gabapentin - but it made me dizzy --- everybody here is like a snowflake - pain and meds are relate-able but we are all so different in this strange land of Trigeminal Neuralgia
The best things you can do are to be easy on yourself, educate yourself and your loved ones - and come here to post when you need help. That's for starters - another great tool is the the book "Striking Back" -- invaluable
I'm on gabapentin after I couldn't take tegretol. Still not on the right dose, I have ATN and the background pain is still there but the good news is the "ice picks" have stopped! So hopefully that might happen for you :)
Gabapentin is a very good medication for those who are suited to it. it can be kinder to the body than tegretol. It does give me a fairground effect if I spin around to quickly or look up too fast. I make sure I am holding on to something if I have to perform either of these. It does take a while to taper up to working dose so don't be dismayed if your pain is not relieved immediately, full relief may be several weeks after the start of taking any medication. All the best with your MRI and you come back and tell us how you were.
I'm one of the snow flakes who takes gabapentin ,600mg 3x and lamicta,l 100mg 2x daily while oxycodone 5mg sits on the sideline waiting for pain breakthrough episodes. It provides manageable pain and the Combo returned me to a functional life. I can, even dine out with friends who no longer head for the door when I attempt to chew. There is a fatigue factor with these meds and teeth brushing and other tasks are never pain free for me. What's comfortable one time may not always be comfortable the next. I wish you the best in your med search. Sometimes it takes awhile. Hang in there.
Hi Jackie can you advise how long you have been on Gabapentin ?,
I'm on 800 mg of Tegretol and in the first 3 months it was virtually 100% effective but not so much now 1 year down the track
thanks

I take Gabapentin also, as I am allergic to Tegretol. I take 600mg , 4x a day. Definitley helps for the stabbing shocking pain, and minimizes the burning. Like Jackie, it does make me dizzy at times, but luckily that is my only side affect. Good luck with your MRI!
