Has anyone has this done for ATN? I have seen it recommended for this type of TN.
I have a peripheral nerve stimulator for ATN pain, and it works very well. I believe the difference between the two is the peripheral stim has leads place just under the skin along the path of the nerve, and the motor cortex leads are implanted in the brain. My surgeon, Jeffrey Brown in NY, is an expert in this type of surgery for TN pain relief. I would recommend you consult with him if at all possible.
Best of luck to you!

I’m in Ohio and unemployed so a trip to NY is probably out of the question. There are some very good neurosurgeons at Ohio State however. I will probably consult with.them. I am told this is one of the only viable surgical options for ATN.
hey zach,
i had motor cortex surgery 4 months ago in chicago for gpn II.
it's experimental and very rarely performed. there are only a handful of surgeons in the US who do it.
the surgery didn't work for me. my doc said 50% chance of success; some studies show slightly higher. it's done especially i think exclusively for type II. when you dealing with life altering pain those odds look pretty good.
as christine said PNS is less invasive and also a very good option for atypical/type II. i would have chosen that but it's not an opotion for those with GPN.
i wish you all the best in finding a solution.
What is GPN? Thanks
Hi Zach
I had MVD on both right and left sides, both affected with TN1 and TN 2 pain. The right side had been symptomatic for ten years, which is likely the reason the MVD failed to relieve the TN2 pain, though it did work on the ahocks. This is the side I have the PNS. The left side, which was only symptomatic for 1year, has had complete resolution of both TN1and TN2 pain from MVD.

I was always told MVD can make TN2 worse and that most surgie options would not work with TN2. I have had pain for a year and a half in left ear but never shocks, stabs, etc. Just burning in the ear, soreness I’m all 3 branches of TN nerve, and I have starred to have toothache like pain the last 2 weeks. I am wondering if I might have geniculate (sp) as I have tinnitus and sound sensitive with acidic pain in left ear. I love my neuro. Great guy very supportive, but I think I need to see a neurosurgeon to get second opinion. I do have ATN 2 symptoms, but so many other things, aricular pain, etc. I have seen a neuro otologist as well. He says I have Tinnitus and Hyperacusis with 5th nerve involvement. That just makes me more confused.
Yes get a second and third opinion…and do your own research…pick your path!
Recent study says MVD in the right hands, for ATN , can make life 65% better

In watched the 2/hour YouTube video with Ken Casey. He does seem to be of the opinion ATN can be helped by surgical intervention. Plus I live in Ohio and I think there are some top TN Dr’s at Cleveland Clinic and OSU Medical Center.
I just emailed Dr Casey.
