Mayo Clinic surgeons

Does anyone have any experience with the surgeons at Mayo? I have to choose and don’t know who has the most TN experience.

Thanks for the help!

If you are talking about the Mayo in Minnesota, I can help you.

I live in MN and have been receiving all my TN care there.

For a neurosurgeon, the best is Dr. Bruce Pollock. (it may be spelled Pollack, though.) He has the most experience, by far.

In fact, I don't think anyone else there actually does TN surgeries. He also has a nurse, Kathy, who goes everywhere with him. She is the contact point, and I just call her directly when I need something.

Have you seen a neurologist, too? Dr. Ivan Garza is wonderful.

At the Mayo, neurosurgeons do not prescribe meds. Only neurologists do.

I cannot say enough good about Dr. Garza. I really like him a lot. And he is a great listener.

Dr. Pollock performed both my MVD, and then a Gamma Knife.

I hope this info helps!

I am so glad you replied! I am scheduled to see Dr. Pollock Aug 28th. I am scheduled with a neurologist in the morning, but don’t know who it is. I did a lot of research and felt like Dr. pollock was the best at Mayo. He does a lot of research, not just surgery.

I was also accepted into Johns Hopkins with Dr. Ben Carson. He is a superb and world recognized surgeon, but I didn’t feel as good about him. Just because there was a lot of red tape with his office. Mayo was easy. My choice had a lot to do with the fact that I was in a 2 week attack when I was referred and Johns Hopkins took much longer to get back with me and didn’t immediately offer me an appt 3 weeks away!

It has been a great experience with Mayo so far.

I'm happy for you.

The care at Mayo is good, and St. Mary's is a nice hospital.
Just an FYI for you...there is a little hotel right across the street called the Fiksdal. It's very nice and clean. All the rooms have the mirco/fridge combo. They are really good to people who will be at St. Mary's.

I've stayed there three times, and my husband stayed the night after I had my MVD. Here is the link, if you are interested.

I am interested in your experience at Hopkins, too.

I do live in MN, but unfortunately both of the procedures that Pollock did were considered "failures."
This, of course, has completely changed the way I am treated at the Mayo.

Pollock now said the only thing he will consider on me is a "destuctive" proceudre, and that scares me...esp. since the really bad spot is the lower branch. Numbness affecting my tongue and mouth really scares me a lot.

I am looking at going somewhere else...

Thanks, and good luck!

Besrestmom,

I am scheduled to see Dr. Petty (neurology) and Dr. Meyer (neurosurgery). Do you know anything about them or would you recommend changing to Pollock?

Thanks.

I can't remember my neurologist's name from Mayo but I do remember Dr. Meyer. I had a successful MVD in July 2009 -- and still pain free. He was wonderful.

K,

Thanks for the response and glad to hear you are still pain free! Was it Dr. Meyer who did your MVD then or someone else?

It has been awhile, how did things go?

I am scheduled at Rochester on October 16th ;( long time out. I don't know who my doctor is yet.
