I am seeing my doc Thursday. He has prescribed Lyrica for me as he feels I would get better pain coverage. I have not filled the srcipt as the side effects listed were too vast. Have you tried or are currently using either of these meds. In combo or alone with your Carbamazapine? I am currently taking 500mg daily of Carba but am not getting great pain coverage. I am constantly aware of nasty tongue pain
Patty,
500 mg/day with Carbazepine is on the low side of the therapeutic range for trigeminal pain. And although any of these meds has a wide range of side effects, very few patients experience all of them as individuals.
Lyrica has a somewhat different action than Baclofen and is more often targeted on neuropathic pain or TN Type 2. Baclofen is less often used as the primary medication of choice, but is fairly often given as a "booster" for Carbamazepine (Tegretol) or Oxcarabazepine (Trileptal). There is a group here on-site that specifically addresses medication side effects (see menu above). The search window at top right may also return useful hits on either of these medication names.
Feel free to follow up.
Regards, Red
I am trying to get up to 800mg a day of Carba. I have found the side effects as dibilitating as the pain at times. The dizziness, mental dullness, word retrieval and such make my job as a para-educator difficult. From what I have read Baclofen has less side effects than Lyrica.
Hi Patty,
I suggest you read the side affects with both. Any medication you take runs the risk of having a side affect. I have taken both of these medications. While I might say one thing over the other another member might say the opposite because of how the medication reacts to each person’s own chemistry in their own body. Red is also right about th baclofen too. Sorry it’s not the best answer but it is so hard to say who will react or get any relief for which medications and how much of those medications. One way I look at new medications is I will try anything if it helps with the pain, and continue as long as the side effects are not freaking me out or a hazard to my health overall. You never really know what helps and what doesn’t untill you try. Really I wish I could give a better answer for you, but hope this helped at lest a little. Hope you have a great day that is pain free.
