My 23 yr-old daughter has recently been complaining to me about pain in a tooth that she had a necessary root canal done in a few years ago. I am in a painc that she could be starting tn. ;-(
I have not told my kids yet about my recent diagnosis since it is under control with meds right now and I don't want to worry them. They always thought the pain I have experienced intermittantly was from my "bad teeth" as I have needed a lot of dental work over the years.
How common is it to have a family member with tn?? I am hoping it is just a bum tooth for her sake...
Sorry to say but I think it is inherited. I have had it for 14 years and my daughter has tiny symptoms of it. I also beleive it is related to intestinal and digestive disorders that cause body-wide inflamation issues and immune system problems. Do you have any digestive troubles?
I'm sorry to say that TN can be hereditary. I have it, my mother has it, and her father had it. We are noticing that it has been manifesting earlier with each subsequent generation. I began with it approximately 10 years earlier than my mother did.
I noticed in David's comment below mention of digestive issues and inflammation. In my family at least, digestion issues haven't occurred. We have switched to an anti inflammatory diet in hopes of reducing the severity or frequency of the TN flare ups but have noticed no real positive effects.
I hope for your daughters sake that it is just a tooth problem.
I'm the first in my family to have ATN (started with a root canal which was necessary). However, my mother and my younger sister both suffer from migraines and I wonder if it can be related.

is there any evidence that this an auto-immune disorder? Many auto-immune disorders are inherited, like Crohn's disease, colitis, etc. I think that would be a significant piece of information.
My neurosurgeon told me the reason he has made TN the major focus of his practice is his mother-in-law has it, and his wife was just diagnosed. That he sees first hand what it is like.
David, Do you have any proof for your assertion? I had bone compressing my nerve. Nothing to do with my gut.
