Is TN hereditary?

Dear fellow TN sufferers:

I just found out that my sister has developed TN. Same side of face, same progression as my ordeal. Neither of our parents had it. My onset was four years ago at age 55, she is 54.

Has anyone any experience with TN in their siblings? I pray that she can get relief as I did, but perhaps sooner! It took 4 years and two gamma knife surgeries to get to pain free today.

Thanks for any insight or family anecdotes, Mollycule

Hi, if I remember correctly, and members please do correct me if I am wrong!! Approximately 5% of Tn sufferers report that TN runs in there family. So your sister has been very unlucky. On anecdotal evidence, it would appear that my late paternal grandmother may have had TN.

I am the fourth in my family. My mom, aunt and great-grandmother also have/had TN.

I just hope it's not that prevalent. I don't want any of my children...or Grandchildren getting this...:(

it is possible that undiagnosed tn was partly responsible for my fathers death at age 36 due to overdose of warfereine long sad story of his demise but my main concern is my 23 year old son who like me at that age kept thinking i had a tooth problem that would resolve in a few days also sinus pain with no infection also clearing in a couple of days and about 3 or 4 incidents a year...words fail me this is far more devastating than my own pain more than anything in the world i wish and hope he dosent have to walk the same path as me

I have t ecently developed geniculat neuralgia after battling ATN for a year and a half. I was talking to my mom about it, and she t Iold me she gets intense pain in her ear a few times a year … pain that makes her want to drop to her knees. Yep, my mom has some form of geniculate neuralgia.

^^^ Typed (very badly) on my phone.

It is absolutely my worst fear that my daughter will get this. I saw my mom suffer horribly for years with TN1. She was in bed medicated for months at a time. I have ATN and it has been the most difficult thing I have dealt with in my life. I wouldn't wish this pain on anyone.
