Is this really ATN?

hi all,

So its been 8 months since the beginning of my symptoms and now i am worse than ever and still not sure what i have. I hope to explain my case as briefly as possibly and get some feedback from the community. I know this does not substitute for medical advice but i still like to get your feedback.

So initially i got shock sensations in my temple. They disappeared and then i got this throbbing aching feeling in my jaw. This was mostly on the right but sometimes i would have pain on the left. Also sometimes i have muscle twitches, i can put my hand on my cheek and feel the muscle twitching. A few times i had this stabbing pain in the jaw too.

Anyways, since a few days ago i have been having this pain under my teeth. So its from the first to the third molars on the bottom right and also sometimes on top! this is a pretty horrendous pain (it probably still not as bad as the classical TN shocks).

In addition I also have occasional pain where my jaw meets my neck (a little below that).

Anyways, what do you guys think this is? first neuro said TN2 and second one said facial migraines.

This tooth pain is pretty awful, i thought TN2 shouldn't be as bad as TN1! but the pain takes your breath away and comes and goes in waves (definitely not an instantaneous shock like TN1). Also i noticed that eating something cold triggers it (i saw a dentist already, so i dont think its tooth related).

I really appreciate all and any feedback or similar experiences. I need to know whats going on because the pain is awful and i cant get a straight diagnosis from anyone!

ps hopefully Red throws his two cents in as well,

Thank you

H

Hi there, indeed you have found the perfect forum: livingwithtn.org just as I did a few months ago and the various discussions will definitely help and make you realize you are not alone. So, to reassure you, my story is very similar to yours, I was diagnosed with AFP (Atypic Facial Pain) which in my case is constant and slightly different from TN1 which comes and goes. It seems the majority of us have it first on the right side, mine started with pain on my scalp, then my eye balls, and gradually down to my upper and lower teeth and gums. I, like most of us did, went to a dentist who told me the cause was because I grinded my teeth and got a night guard made; he then referred me to a gum specialist as the pain would not go away; the latter sent me to an endodontist where I had a root canal done (which I found out later was unecessary), then back to the first dentist as the pain was still the same and was excruciatingly unbearable, on top of the frequent headaches, he referred me to a stomatologist/maxillofacial specialiste where I had an x-ray of my mouth which resulted in a neuro referral and there you have it. I was prescribed Gabapentin (300mg/4xday), the generic for Neurotin, and I have had Sphenopallatin Ganglion Block whereas a cathater in inserted in your nose and an injection of 2% Lidocaine is pushed in to supposedly numb the trigeminal nerve. I am at my 7th, but recently discovered a hard bump on the right side of my palate above the back molars and I am waiting to find out what the next step is. Feel free to email me directly. Take care and good luck to you.

hi Astrid8,

Thank you for your reply. I hope you get some answers in regards to the bump.

I will add you as a friend on the forum and we can have a chat at some point; I am also from California (San Jose).
