Ice Pick Pain behind the eye

I used to suffer migraines. Always on the right side behind my eye. I would get an "aura" that would warn me one was approaching. When the TN pain started, the migraines stopped. Well, I should say the aura stopped. Now, I get this ice pick stabbing pain behind my eye and nothing helps it. The only way I can get rid of it is sleep. My neurologist thinks this pain could be related t the TN or actually TN pain itself.

Has anyone experienced this type of pain? I'm trying to figure out if it's a true migraine or TN pain. I've been TN pain free for a year and have even been able to taper down the dosage of my Carbatrol. BUT, if this is TN pain, then I'm wondering if I should up my dosage again.

Any thoughts on this?

I do have eye pain but not the ice pick pain there. My "ice pick" pain is in my ear. If it were me, I would increase the meds to see if the pain subsided or at least got better. Did you make a decision yet? I see its been awhile since you posted this. I'm sorry you are having this.

Hi Debbie! I just increased my Carbatrol back up to 300mg a day. I also had dumped my Lyrica, but am going to start that up again, as I’ve had some break through pain in my face…UGH! My son is getting married in 3 weeks. I cannot do this right now! The Lyrica was my magic pill, so I’m hoping it will get things under control again. Thanks for your comment. I hope you get relief from your “ice pick!”

Hi Shirley!

I'm pretty sure my ice pick pain IS a form of migraine pain. When I used to get them all the time, I would have an "aura" that would warn me one was on the way. Not any more. My sister used to get them with just the aura and no pain...just a sick feeling. My doctor said they are different for everyone. I've noticed that I'm more prone to get them when I've been sleep deprived, which is a lot when your suffering TN pain. It just bothered me when my neuro said he thought it was related to the TN.

I just went through 3 days of this ice pick pain without any relief. It gets so bad that sleep is the only thing that really gets rid of it. By the end of day 3, I was almost in tears. I'd had enough! I have Lortab for neck and shoulder isues and caved in and took one of those just to relax me. I was finally able to go to sleep and the next morning the pain was significantly less. The following day it was finally gone. It's enough to make you crazy!

Thank you for the infor on the book, Shirley. I will look into it! You know, I was pain free for almost a year. We have been gradually cutting back on meds and now the pain is back. Just a little here and there, but enough to freak me out. I went off of Lyrica completely, but I will be starting it back up, hopefully, today. Waiting on my prescription to be refilled. I had been TN pain free for so long, I’d forgotten (well, not really) or put it out of my head, but just how horribly rotten this condition is! I hope you are doing well. Blessings to you…
