help - i am not sure whether to do this in two posts - i think i will! i had a MRI scan onj thursday to rule out any tumours, strokes etc before having trigeminal neuralgia confirmed. On thursday evening i began a severe pain in my eye and right side of my face. by saturday it was impossible so i was admitted to hospital. the MRI scan showed that i was clear of any diseases but Trigeminal Neuralgia was confirmed. after anti nausea and pain relief, i was released. 3 days later, i am still very tired, movement hurts my head and i am very emotional and feel unable to cope.
has any one else ever been admitted to hospital and do the after effects wear off or not?
how was trigeminal neuralgia confirmed exactly? i also had stabbing pain in my right eye to start with it has changed over the months it now feels like pulling
I hope you have an appt. with a neurologist -- you need to probably get on an anti-convulsant med as soon as you can--your regular doctor might be able to get you started on one --- this is rare - so you have to find somebody that has TN patients -- read all you can on face pain info up above
ask your regular doctor for prescription lidocaine patches/cream
keep posting!
--- the more you / or somebody can read this stuff - learn TN -- the faster your hopes of feeling better
hello to you both - it was confirmed only by ruling our everything else and having a MRI scan, ears nose and throat specialist and a eye specialist check me over thoroughly - nothing untoward was found and my list of symptoms didnt fir cluster migraines etc but did fit Trigeminal. i also have epilepsy so i am unable to have Gapapentin as it will react with my drugs. they have started me on carbomazapan - but if these drugs dont work, because of my other meds, they are stuck for new ideas but have said that they will probably end up doing a nerve block on me - but that this also carries risks of its own
Are you a candidate for MVD surgery?
It's a cranial operation - where they go in behind your ear and put Teflon pads on any compressions found... can be years of relief without meds and their side effects-- 2 week general recovery
If you have too many other procedures first
- then want an MVD later -
your percentages of long-term relief go down.
I think you should buy/order/borrow the book that is our bible here "Striking Back" by Dr. Ken Casey
Has mannnnny different treatments - so you and your doctor can make a decision together-
but your doctor should have TN patients already - or find another to be your partner in this journey - Doctor should not dictate your path
with this life-long TN.... you have to get educated -- between that book and this site - I'm a million miles away from the pain I was in 1.5 years ago.
thankyou so much. i feel so confused by everything! i had never heard of this and the doctors and migraine specialists in my area, believe i have been misdiagnosed all these years! i also have M.E and i have a illeostomy. so i am trying absorb an awful lot to manage all my conditions and also keep the epilepsy under control
Hi sammykin, sorry you have to go through this. I deal with the severe burning in the right side of my face and eye everyday. Besides the medication I use a lot of ice. I have a few gel masks that I keep in the freezer and one of the old fashioned bags that you can fill that I use on the right side of my head and face. It temporarily helps with the burning. Also, try not over do it with the eye. I have to take lots of breaks on the days I am able to work. Reading at home is also done a bit at a time.
Read as much as you can on this. The book Striking Back is mentioned a lot on this site, it truely helps. There is so much information in it about this awful disorder. It doesn't make the pain go away but it helps to give you a direction and feel like you may have a hold on what you are dealing with. Its scary to have this thrown at you with all else you are dealing with. This site is incredible, the people are a godsend.
Hope you are having a better day
Stephanie
