Hi, I've been wondering how common it is for TN sufferers to have stomach problems. This is not as bizarre as it seems. I'm being treated for B12 deficiency currently, working on the supposition that a deficiency may have caused or contributed to my TN.
I've had a series of stomach problems since I was in my early forties and they run in the family. As TN is a demyelinating disease I wondered if nutritional deficiencies are playing a part in it.
Any thoughts? How many of you have a stomach disorder, and do you think your TN might be related to your body not getting enough of a specific nutriment - or two?
I'm 44 and have only had stomach problems since MVD in July. Anything I eat or drink not only hurts my stomach but my whole abdomen. I've undergone an endoscopy with no findings. During the endoscopy they took samples of my stomach which the findings should come back in a week or so. I've been on Prilosec and am currently in the process of changing my diet hoping it helps. At this point I can't say if it is related to TN.
Hi I was diagnosed two years ago with TN this August Last December I stated with bad stomach pains and diarrhea which I still have, had colonoscopy shows nothing, changed diet gone gluten free, the doctor said the mind is. Powerful thing and for me to put my Stomach problems on the Back burner I’m sure it’s all the meds and anxiety I go through. Hope e every one is pain free sunshine xxx
Hi Jeanie, I was really looking for stomach problems BEFORE you developed TN, as a possible causative agent. Did you have the stomach problems, or any hint of them, before your MVD?

Hi Sunshine, like I said to Jeanie, I was really looking for anyone who has had a history of stomach problems, with a view to them maybe playing a part in their TN. But I'm not at all surprised your TN anxiety brings it on - I'm pretty sure that's common!

Hi Barbara, did you have constipation before you got TN, or is it a new thing? Just trying to see if there is any causative connection between stomach problems and TN, but so far it doesn't look like it! I'm thinking stress might be a more likely culprit!

hi . I have had consipation for years,it kind of started when my thyroid started having problems, soooooooo 12 yrs or so later i still have bowel issues. Perhaps there is a connection with ATN / TN and auto immune diseases...........

Hi Barbara, you have thyroid problems? There's a strong link between that and B12 deficiency. I'm a member of a B12 deficiency forum and it's really common for women to suffer from both thyroid and B12 deficiency, so maybe there is a chain of events leading to TN. But maybe I'm running the risk of playing seven steps to Kevin Bacon here!

hi.Yes i have fat thyroid aka 'underactive gland'. I had my bloods done yesterday when i went to see the oral/facial pain specialist, and vit B12 was one of the boxes ticked.Pehaps now i can finally understand why i can never keep my eyes open, but am sure my own doc has already ran that test.I am presuming the doc yesterday wants some tests done before seeing the neurologist. What will a neurologist do. Going back to the Vit b 12 ,when i had overactive gland,i was meant to have high blood pressure, but i never did,and the docs did say it was unusual not to .

IBS? That's really interesting. So there is definitely a possibility for you that inadequate or malfunctioning digestive system might have contributed to a nutritional deficit of some sort that led to TN. I think I'm onto something here!

That's really interesting, Barbara. You should definitely keep a tight eye on that B12. If it's anything less than 400 you should tell your doctor you are in the 'grey zone' (plenty of sound research to back this up) and that you want B12 shots. If he or she is resistant tell them you are already exhibiting neurological damage (your TN) and it would be irresponsible not to treat it as possible damage from low B12. That's what I did. Don't know if the B12 is doing me any good yet, but it certainly hasn't done me any harm.

I was actually going to post this same question I do and have had stomach problems forever! I was also diagnosed with IBS years ago! I have awful problems with constipation. If i don't go each day I start to feel very sick. I have to eat yogurt alot to help me that activia and drink aloe juice. When I didn't go for two days last week My pain got worse stabbing pain in my eye kept saying to my boyfriend this is so weird my arms also turned red and felt warm which has happend before i believe its the medication im on but used to happen when i first took it hasn't happend in a long time. I have mentioned my stomach issues to him wondering if they have a connection. I remember asking the doctor years ago about my IBS and how i would feel pressure all the way up to my throat. I don't know if this is a underlying issue but doesn't hurt to throw it out there.
Hi Jstarl! Very interesting to read that you also have longstanding stomach problems. I do feel something has to start off the demyelination in our brains and it seems as if not getting enough nutriment of one sort or another might be the reason. My only other theory is that it might be due to overeating/obesity or too much inflammation from 'bad' foods. Not sure how I can start a thread called ARE YOU FAT? though! But it would be very interesting to know.........

Hi barbara, irritable bowel syndrome can be exacerbated by stress and seems to be more common when you are older. I take probiotics and have seen a remarkable change. no side effects, worth a try?
Can I ask, Bebe, is it the tablet kind you take, or the little drinks? And do you find probiotics are better than just eating live yogurt?

Hi, sorry if my comment went awry. New here. Still trying to get the hang of replies. I take capsules. I've always been a yogurt eater lol. I started probiotics to counteract the effect of high doses of antibiotics I had to take for a nasty stomach infection . Bonus side effect was less bloating, constipation etc and more regular bowels. You don't need the most expensive brands either. generic works fine. I just take one per day but if you're having major issues you can take more. A naturopath is probably your best resource for info.
