Home from Surgery

Hi everyone,

I'm tired but happy, surgery went well. It took 4 1/2 hours due to adhesions from the gamma knife six years ago. Turns out there were two offending blood vessels compressing the nerve. They are weaning me off the lyrica but so far NO shocks at all. The final test will be when I'm totally off the drug. The incision is sore but I have pain med prescription for that. All in all, it wasn't half as bad as I had feared but I'm glad it's done.

A want to offer my heartfelt thanks to my family and all my wonderful tn friends support, it got me through this much more easily. My love to all, Mark

Mark,
That is wonderful. No TN pain. So it looks like it has been successful. I’ll pray you continue to heal and that the pain won’t return. What is hard to understand is why the pain suddenly returns? It happens to others and one would think the blood vessels didn’t suddenly compress the nerve.
Take care and get rest. I was exhausted for a couple of weeks and tired for a couple of months.
Liz

Hi Liz, I have the expected pain at the incision site when I move around and like a white noise sound in my ear but am very positive. Also exhausted, time to rest. Thanks, Mark Liz K. said:

Dear Mark,
Liz offers great advice - get lost of rest. You tire easily because your body is dedicating so many resources toward healing your head. Did the NS tell you not to “push”, to exert force that you can feel in your head? Mine told me that- your dura mater has to mend and any pressure on it is not good.
Rest easy, the hard part is over, and remember, right now, you come first - you need to heal well in order to give your best to those you love, down the road. And do not feel like you are asking your NS too many questions - if you are feeling strange in any way, or others observe that your mental capacities have diminished, get on the phone to your NS immediately. My husband saw that my cognition had diminished, and took me to the ER. It turned out that I spent that night and the next days fighting aseptic meningitis. I had had no idea that I had been acting strangely. So listen to others as well.
That’s all I can think of right now. take it easy :o)
Lily

Thanks Lily,
Right now I have severe pain when bending down and a constant high-pitched sound in my ear. I’m going to call my NS Monday and ask about it. Pretty much taking pain pills and sleeping, pretty worn out.

I am happy your surgery worked for you! It makes me feel good to hear some one is out of pain. I hope it will be gone for good.

Glad you are up and about, Mark : )

Each day you will gain a bit more strength and be able to laugh, really laugh; especially when one of your friends ; ) mentions that if you had that incision about an inch higher, that they wouldn’t need to have shaved your head!

I’ll be watching for an update…Write down and discuss everything when you “Talk To Your Doctor”!

Sending my best, bob

LOL, Bob, you must know my friends. I am not seeing much improvement yet. I still fall asleep constantly. My left ear is stopped up with a noise like a machine running or air cycling. (Odd sound) The headaches are severe, I suppose they will get milder in a week or so. I do look forward to shouting or laughing loudly, right now I’m still afraid to.

Hi, Mark
So glad to hear you have No TN pain. That is wonderful! Do give yourself time to heal. For the first few weeks try to stay in, watch TV, movies etc. it does get old but it is so worth it. I to had headaches for awhile. Mine continued but toward the end of the 2nd week, I stopped taking Hydocodone and the headaches stopped. My brother had MVD surgery years ago and he said the part he hated the most was the constant loud sound in his ears like a machine going are a train passing by. His Dr. told him it was from air getting into the cranial area. He said it didn’t last to long and one day just disappeared.

You will be able to laugh out loud , shout etc. I have been singing Gospel music for years and travel to different churches and events. Last night I was able to stand up in front of a crowd and sing for the first time since my surgery and I smiled really big.
Take Care and God Bless
