Hello! Feeling better after root canal treatment on a tooth

To everyone with TN and tooth problems:

I know most of you must have seen a dentist before being diagnosed. I also saw one, but he said a cavity in that state can't cause such tremendous pain (I had a cavity on a molar tooth from my upper jaw). Well I checked with another dentist and she did a root canal treatment on the tooth......and my V3 TN stabs have stopped. I don't know if the tooth was the cause all along or if it was just a trigger for the TN. Nonetheless I recommend that everyone should go see a dentist and ask for an orthopantomography (it sees all your teeth).

Happy winter holidays...........and most importantly, pain-free winter holidays!

good morning,

That is very interesting that a root canal got rid of your pain.. Are you still pain free? Were you on any meds? Sorry for so many questions......I hope you will be pain free from now on!!!

Happy Winter Holidays to you as well!

This can be a funny thing. I started having pain in a tooth that already had a root canal , I had it removed . The pain migrated to the next tooth , 2 root canals later on that tooth 2 dentists told me there was no reason for the pain , I had it removed , the pain moved to the next tooth. and continued as ghost pain on the missing teeth . I hope that this has solved your problem . But I would say that a lot of cases begin in the dentist chair.

I'm not saying I am pain free. It's just that my stabs are gone for 2 days and I feel my cheek muscles relaxing more. I can only say it's gone if I don't have the stabs and flare-ups for a long period of time.

I went to the dentist because my neurologist said to check with a second dentist. She said to rule out any other dental problem.

I feel better..........that is what matters and hope the TN stays away. I certainly know that the cavity was a trigger......that is a fact.

My case is kind of strange. I don't take medication while having the stabs because the stabs are not constant in intensity and are very short, 3-4 sec, and can be rare (2-3 per day) or very frequent (50 per day). In a flare-up it is hell (I have constant pain ..........a level 7 kind of pain and the jabs are very intense). I can't stay without carbamazepine (tegretol).............but it usually lasts only 3 days with medication..........I told this to my neurologist and she said it is kind of weird because she hasn't seen a flare-up that resolves in a period that short of time.So she suggested to see another dentist.

So I am not saying nothing yet, besides the fact that I feel better. And I hope for all of us to feel better!

I just wanted to point out that we should pay more attention to excluding the secondary causes to our TN because those tend to be curable.

Sorry about my english and best of luck!

I don't like to say pain-free.........because I have had days with no stabs. I just didn't have until now, 2 days with no stabs consecutively. So something must have happened.

Well that is great news..Glad you are feeling better..

I didn't mean to sound negative , I truly hope that this will help you get some relief. I have done a lot of reading in the past weeks and found that most TN people will first visit a dentist before they find a diagnosis . Many credit a rough dentist with the novacain shots as possible cause . I went to an oral surgeon who suggested to me that my dentist may have pierced a nerve with a needle and that sometimes because of the structure of the nerves that it can take as long as 2 years to heal. Now this is a lot of speculation ... but it all led me to be in this forum .

You are correct in saying that a cavity or exposed nerve in a tooth will definitely create an opportunity for a trigger. It loops directly into the Trigeminal nerve system . So it makes good sense to watch out for that kind of thing.
