Has anyone seen this BBC article re: Dr. Thomas Haag re treatment with cotton buds of anaesthetic up the nose

I'm completely new to this group, but my daughter found this recent article. This seems like a pretty noninvasive treatment. I wonder if any doctors here are doing this:

Is there anyone out there who has heard of this treatment?

I just emailed my neurosurgeon to please give unofficial opinion or knowledge of this…

Will post when he answers…

since he is on the board of Trigeminal Neuralgia Assoc. hoping he’s heard of it.

I've had nose pain with my TN and I use either 2% lidocaine gel by just putting a small blob in there, and if you can't find that then baby teething gel has anaesthetic in it too (we have Bonjela here, don't know what the US alternative is).

Thanks KC - I just emailed my neurologist and will let you know what he's said as well.

That's good to know. I will do some research and see what products that we have here that I can try.

Ummm… No direct quote here…in the UK could have been medicinal cocaine. It just says anesthetic…so impossible to duplicate unless somebody writes this doctor…could be ketamine, lidocaine, EMLA …any numbing agent legal or not?

Anyone here wanna take the reins and find out what the mystery chemical was and report back? Dr. Seems media friendly over this…might talk to somebody who is curious or potential patient…?

Is this GOOD thing or a bad thing Cleo? The nerve block thing? in this manner?

Perhaps Cleo is right, but why would an SPG block make national news? Seems like it's more revolutionary than that. My neurologist was not much assistance, but he said he would be okay with me putting cotton swabs of anbesol up my nose to see if that works. (Thank you Porcelina for the idea!) I tried it this morning, so I could drink my decaf coffee. I directed the swab upward and I got relief. It may be coincidence. I watched the SPG block youtube demo and that dr. put it in straight back. I didn't see that until after, but my pain is upward. So that is the direction I went.

This is my 3rd year in a row for getting this condition in the summer. The last 2 yrs, it lasted 2 weeks. I'm in my 2nd week now, so maybe it's waning. I HOPE. I have to start a new teaching job next week and I can't imagine how that will happen if this is going on. I can just see it, "Excuse me kids while I sit down and cry for a minute." I would like to know how others do their jobs while having this condition.

I would recommend that you DO NOT do this. I think the only thing I managed to do is irritate my nasal passage and then I experienced the most excruciating pain ever later in the day.
