Gabapentin

please help someone!!! :( i have been on Gabapentin for about 2 weeks now as Tegretol landed me in hospital with severe side effects! however just in the last 4 days or so i have had the most terrible indigestion, acid reflux, burning. to the extent i hesitate to eat and drink as almost immediately i am hit with the pain. it goes in rolls of pain all day and all night. heat will ease it. Gaviscon is my new best friend!!!!!! joking apart it is really making my life miserable and i used to have a ulcer and am hoping that is not returning. i also have a illeostomy (stoma) and that is unhappy with the acid reflux etc as well.,

can anyone either reassure me(sort of!) that they have suffered or what advice to any of you have. my partner feels i ought to come off it but i feel that as i have only been on it for 2 weeks or so, i should give it longer :(

Your gastric reaction should be communicated to the prescribing doctor immediately. Some people are hypersensitive to most of the meds among the anti-seizure group. With a history of ulcer and acid reflux, this kind of potential allergy should be watched carefully. FYI, probably the best tolerated med in this class from a perspective of side effects, is Trileptal (Oxcarbazepine).

Please contact your neurologist to discuss your present gastric symptoms. It's possible that you'll be continued on Gabapentin for a while longer to see if you acclimate. But that's a decision for the doc.

Regards and best,

Red

thanks for that - i didnt know about the other meds but i will mention it to my doctor. i will continue for a while longer to see if i get used to it. today i managed some dry bread and milk witrh only a dull ache but i had tea this morning and was doubled over. i am trying rice later. my TN is beginning to react to my tummy pain - think i am tired and tightening everything up so ease pain. i was away with my partner this weekend and it was supposed to be relaxing but the pain made it rather miserable

Sammykin, it says on my meds that I should not take gab with indigestion treatments so, as Red says, please take medical advice asap.
