Gabapentin

Recently on th 20th December, I saw a new consultant. before I was taking 2700mg a day of gabapentin. The consultant has upped this to 3300mg per day. Now I seem to have a sore throat on one side only, and quite a few red blotches over my skin. The constant ache in my cheek has gone though I still have pain at night time. I am due to have a MRI scan on January 22nd 2011, but I am not seeing this new guy until April 2011. Does anyone else think my sore throat and blotches could be due to the increase in Gabapentin. I don’t feel ill other than my TN.

'I'm a sarcast, not a pharmacist, Margaret!' To paraphrase Dr McCoy, from Star Trek.

Hoping it's nothing and sending you my best for thousand and always. bob

Hello, Margaret.

I am on 1800 mg. of Gabapentin daily. I have never suffered such symptoms. I have never read that these could be side-effects to the drug.

With that said, could it be that possibly you may be mildly allergic to one of it's one of components of the drug, as you seem to be presenting allergy type symptoms. Have you thought, conceivably, that it may be such a slight allergy that perhaps only it only manifests itself at higher doses of Gabapentin in your case. Who knows. This is obviously, of course, only speculation, only my best guess, or what would make the most sense to me. YES ABSOLUTELY, I would phone your physician as soon as you possibly are able!

At any rate, I am sorry that you are experiencing these unpleasant side effects in addition to the pain.

Happy New Years! I certainly do hope you feel better.

Stef

Today my sore throat has disappeared and my blotches are less noticable, so I think it was just due to the increase. Bob you as usual have made me smile how you keep so cheerful I will never know. Thank you everyone for your interest, it’s good to know there are people who know what it’s like. Happy New Year to you, lets hope they find something for this monster, that can really put him to bed for good. Margaret

Hi Margaret, I’m on 1800 mgs per day. No side effects that I’m aware of. Mind you, I’ve put on a bit of weight recently which I would love to blame on Gabapentin, but sadly must attribute to the festive season. Best wishes. JR

I am up to 4800 MG a day. It seems to be working for me and controls the pain, no side effects I can figure. My MRI is negative. Everyone is diffrent. Best to you.

Carl 4800mg? Wow… that seems like a lot of medicine. I am taking 1200mg per day and complaining. I am now on my 4th consecutive day without an attack. I have known of my TN for -5- years and this attack period is the first in 2.25 years. Carl, can you work? does that medicine affect your functioning? your lifestyle? TIA.

Carl,

I have been up to this level as well. When I first met my neurosurgeon, and told him how much I was on, he said "Finally, someone who is on a substantial level - I just had a guy who is on 900mg and wants to head straight to surgery!". I beleive that 4,800 is the very top prescribable dose. And I was still working - but doing so VERY poorly of course. I would hold meetings, I would forget words left and right, my mouth would be so dry that my lips would stick to my teeth and I would have to unstick them with my finger. I am very certain that the other team members thought that I was on drugs. They were right, haha. At least my boss knew what I was going through and had my back when they complained about my performance.

Does anyone have advice on when and how to stop taking meds? I am on Gebapentin 4x300mg a day have been taking meds since Dec 18,2010. I have had TN since 2005, it comes and goes. In fact I have not had an attack since Oct 2008 before the recent attack. I did not any meds betwenn OCt 2008 & Dec 2010. Any help is appreciated. TIA.

I quit work in December. I get tired real easy, but continure to “function” ok. THe big lifestyle change is that I cannot go outside unless it is clam. The wind is my trigger. At least I know that and can stay out of it. My Dr increased my doasge over about 3 weeks, a little more each day.

Thank you, Jerry!

I will make a million dollars writing, "Titrating Meds For Dummies". LOL! As the drug company commercials say, "Talk to YOUR Doctor!"

Gloria,

A rash means the largest organ of the body is telling you something, as to what, there again, "Talk to YOUR Doctor!"

I had a rash 25 years ago, when I had tonsillitis. My Doc looked down my throat and sent me for an emergency tonsillectomy.

G-Force, do you mean the guinea pig part?

I am an expert on nothing, though I have a passion for life: )

Good comments from all in this discussion, my best to everyone! bob

Thanks everyone my rash has cleared. Wish my TN had, it is being a pain ( and I mean that in every sense ) Thought the increase in Gabapentin would have helped now on 1200mg 3 times daily. In fact during the last month the TN has got worse. Off to have a MRI scan today. Hope you are all having a good day. Margaret.
