Functional NeuroSurgery

I am currently 3 1/2 years post MVD. About 2 months ago I had those horrible twinges in my jaw and my ear hurt. That old familiar feeling scared the heck out of me. For 3 weeks I prayed I would not get the electrical shocks I had prior to surgery but with every surge of pain, numbness, and burning that ranged from a 3-5 I cringed it was going to happen. Luckily, it has not. I have had repeat MRI's, and met with my Neurosurgeon and a RadioSurgeon whom both have concluded a second MVD would not be beneficial to me at this time and would only make my pain worse. I am working with my Neurologist to find a medicine combination that will lessen the face pain and let me function normally. I have not been able to work for a month. I guess I am no longer classified as a TN patient. I am now an Atypical Facial pain patient. I was instructed that if medical therapy does not work for me, I may need to seek a doctor for "Functional Neurosurgery". Ever hear of that??

No I have not -- but look / search on the forums board - in the last couple of weeks , a new guy Nathan maybe, has a very interesting alternative treatment to try before perhaps a second surgery. It has to do with Ketamine -- it's like anything else, can last a month to over a year, and eliminate nerve pain. I have it on my list of things to research before going ahead with a 2nd MVD -- not many reservations if I needed another MVD -- but this sounds like something nobody else has offered to share on here.

FOUND-

The surgical destruction or chronic excitation of a part of the brain as treatment of a physiological or psychological disorder.
I would also get a second consultation from somebody who has done thousands of MVDs such as Dr. Kenneth Casey unless you have no doubts about this recent medical advice -- you can google him - he answers his own email! - Keep Posting!
