My husband is newly diagnosed with TN, and the ear pain is constant, even though some of the other symtoms have come and gone since he started Tegretol. It’s in the right ear- the same side as his TN.

I also have ear pain on my TN side.

I’m newly diagnosed with Atypical Facial Pain, but wanted to put in that I have suffered with ear pain on my effected side for several years. Always felt like pressure in the ear. Doctors said it looked fine. ENT said I had Meniere’s Syndrome. I’m just now putting 2 and 2 together and realizing that it was nerve all along. Does anyone also have ringing in their ears? Mine have rung for 29 years, but have been MUCH louder the past 3 months. It is very distracting.

Chalkdusty,
I have ringing in my ears but I’ve never related it to TN. I don’t know if others have. I think ringing in the ears is common.

My TN started with ear pain. ENT's kept saying nothing was wrong. Even after scoping my canal to find irritation of the membrane, chalked it up to the cold weather. Which is a constant trigger. I say this and I am just told nothing is wrong. It eventually spread across my face over a 14 mo period. I take Trileptal and still have the constant ear pain. But the MRI shows nothing is wrong with my middle ear. Ruled out MS as well. So I have to manage it wil medication for now. All of this happens on the TN affected side.

how strange that I would find this discussion on ear aches...I have tubes in my ears, they know for a fact the one on my left side is still there, my ear began bleeding a few days ago, i went to ER on saturday morn, got drops and pain med as the pain in the ear and jaw and swollen gland area was unforgiving....on Sunday the pain got worse on face at teeth area site and I was screaming for relief...well, all of a sudden an explosion happened between inside cheek and gumline...I now have a bulge there and the pain is so much better, but it surely feels like I have a wad of cotton in my mouth...I am going see my regular med doc of Tuesday if not sooner...oh, all this came with fever and chills too.........but I am wondering if all this neuralgia pain is directly related to my sinus on the left side....hmmmmm

I get pain in my ear, on the same side of my face at my atypical TN. It usually coincides with TN pain in my jaw and I get swelling and too. I occasionally get ringing in my ear. I take tegretol and lyrica. I just got a mouth guard called a NTI (http://www.nti-tss.com/) that has really helped with my ear and jaw pain.

I have suffered with ear pain on my right side. For 6 years I was told I didn’t have an ear infection but my eardrum might be a little pink so they sent me home with antibiotics. I knew there was no way i was being diagnosed correctly so I went to a different doctor and was diagnosed with TMJ. My cheek would swell and my jaw would be sore so I believed my diagnosis. Few months later my earaches turned into jolts across my face and I started researching TMJ more and saw a link about TN and how people are misdiagnosed. 90% of my right side pain is in and around my ear area but my MRI shows it’s my trigeminal nerve touching my artery and my ear looks perfectly fine. It’s the nerves around my jaw and ear that flare up. Feels like the worst ear infection ever.

Jenn, very interesting...I am going to doc this afternoon and will ask him about that as he has diagnosed me with TN twice already...but ER docs see an infection, hmmmmm, interesting.....

I also have ear pain on my ATN/TN side, which manifests itself as a deep kinda pain, sharp but not electric. Its only one or two days a week, and usually for 7-8 hours at a time. There are also moments of partial hearing loss in that ear when sound just kinda partially "cuts out", though I have excellent hearing (when that isn't occurring of course).

I suppose I should mention that to a doctor (haven't told any doctors that symptom), and perhaps the sharp back of the head (crown area) electrical pains which occur maybe 3-4 times a month but which are fairly painful and sudden, I always wrote those off as just some kinda of headache or something, but maybe its Occipital Neuralgia? if it is, luckily its fairly infrequent. (all of this is always the same side, the ATN/TN side).
