I had the surgery on 12/16. Since this site has been such a blessing for me as a resource, I wanted to share my experiences thus far. The surgery went very smoothly. The Dr. found two arterial compressions and two compressions with a vein. He corrected all. I spent one night in ICU and was then transferred to a regular room where they were willing to release me. I stayed an extra night (mostly to keep my wife calm who did not think it was wise to leave the hospital less than 48 hrs after surgery).
My observations so far are as follows:
-
No TN pain. None. I ate my first full meal the day after the surgery. I can’t remember chewing this freely in a long time.
-
ICU is awful. Ask for anti nausea medicine. Dry heaves due to anesthesia are no joke. Bring a neck pillow. It is impossible to get comfortable.
-
Be prepared for partial numbness in the mouth and the side of the head. It is a little like novocaine wearing off after a trip to the dentist. The Dr. assures me this will fade, but I could live with it if it never improves (compared to the pain).
-
Be ready to take it easy. I am an active person and it had been very difficult to realize my limitations. Every day is an improvement, but I tire easily and rely heavily on my wife to handle most of the issues at the house.
I am excited about the results of the surgery and think it has turned out as well as can be expected. My thanks to the My support network. You all are in my prayers and I wish you the best possible holiday season.
