Cyst behind teeth

I am currently on tegritol and prior to medication I had electric, stabbing pain on my upper and lower jaw and 24/7 burning pain in my ear. Initially the full dental x-rays did not show any abnormalities. Now with tegritol I still have breakthrough pain and sometimes it is on the opposite side. My triggers right now are talking, chewing, cold breeze, warm heat from oven. Around 2 months ago I noticed a continuous sore tooth, change in my bite and I had a swollen submandibular gland so my doctor sent me to the dentist. I went to a different dentist and he said I had a cracked tooth and needed me to see a specialist because there was black matter on the X-ray, below the tooth. I finally had the special 3-d dental scan done and it revealed a cyst behind and below the cracked tooth and it needs to be removed. I asked the dentist if this is causing the TN, obviously the first thing that popped into my head. He said it is possible but highly unlikely. I am scared about the procedure (in mid June) and mentioned the 'Tips for facial pain patients when visiting the dentist' from the TNA site and he said that the specialist will know what to do.

I wonder if clenching has caused this cyst and/or the broken tooth? Did the cyst cause the broken tooth and the bite change? Has anyone else had this cyst? Any suggestions?

I don't think you can blame yourself for the cyst.... and I don't think anything you could do would prevent another one or cause another. I've never heard of this - but I'm glad you have an answer of some kind! Keep Posting!

Thanks for the link Cleo but I cannot watch a surgery that I will or have had done. I have had a lot of surgeries and they don't really freak me out as long as I don't watch a video on it.

You seem to know a lot about dental issues -- are you in the dental profession?

Hi Cleo, you must have read a lot about dental issues after you have suffered trigeminal nerve damage. You are so knowledgeable regarding this and I once thought you were a dentist.

Wow, that is hopeful. I do get tn pain on the opposite upper side though. Can pain be referred that way?

No Collette i am not in the dental profession. I have been trigeminal nerve damaged for a long time. Your situation can cause trigeminal nerve pain. hopefully after you have the tooth and cyst removed all your symptoms will eventually subside forever.

collette - i do hope for you it will also be discovered cause ALL of your pains...

I may have this also. I started out with dental pain a month ago. The dentist could find nothing on x-rays, including panoramic. I was put on Amoxicillin for a week but the pain just got worse and moved around my jaw from my ear to my front teeth, leading me to this website. A month later and I am finally on Tegretol which has taken care of the pain for the most part--except for in one tooth, the original suspect, and now my bite is off, with that tooth apparently being pushed up. I have a neurologist appointment in two days but it sounds like i should be seeing an oral surgeon? Or what kind of specialist should I see?

My panoramic did not show anything either. I happened to go to another dentist, he noticed I had a cracked tooth, took a regular x-ray and saw a black matter below it. Then he ordered a 3D scan which revealed the cyst. When I was having the TN attacks random teeth would hurt and they would constantly change. My bite has changed which I feel is caused from the cyst. I have been told that panoramics are not very accurate so if I were you I would have a regular X-ray of that tooth, maybe another opinion. I was told that if tegretol eases the pain then it is TN. This dentist told me that I have 3 separate issues, cracked tooth (now abscessed), cyst and TN. I will have the cyst and tooth fixed next month. The oral surgeon travels all over the province so I have had to wait 2 months and now I am on antibiotics. I cannot give advice as I am still uncertain and hopeful but my story my help you somewhat. Keep in touch.

To me it seems like too much of a coincidence to have these problems not be related. And to just appear at the same time?

I know what you mean. I have however had a type of neuralgia (ice pick pain) for over 20 years. I also have breakthrough pain on the other side.

I see. For me it is all new. Like everyone, I just hope they can find the problem and fix it! Good luck to you, Collette.
