CSF leak and hearing loss after MVD

Went to see my GP yesterday, 10 days after my MVD, with the following complaints:

  • severe migraines with nausea, light sensitivity and double vision
  • ongoing leakage from my left ear and hearing loss
  • lose of balance and dizziness
  • lower back pain shooting down my right leg
  • stiff neck

He decided to call an ambulance, so I ended up in Emergency, where I was diagnosed with CSF leak, hearing loss and a perforated eardrum.

I was seen by an ENT specialist who told me I would have to undergo further surgery to seal my eardrum and to follow up on the hearing loss.

I was also seen by a member of the neurosurgical team who deemed a spinal tap would be too risky, so he sent me off for a CT scan. No fractures were seen, just blood, fluid and air.
He then told me I have a small CSF leak with fluid that oozes through the hole in my ear (otiritis) and that causes meningeal irritation and irritation down my spine.

There is nothing much that can be done about it apart from taking a lot of strict bed rest and consuming large amounts of fluid and caffeine, so I was sent back home and told to call another ambulance in case my condition would suddenly worsen or if I would get a high fever.

I feel sorry for my poor husband who has to look after our two children (the other two are visiting family overseas) and do everything around the house (we are a migrant family). As you can tell, I am not used to being waited upon!

Any similar experiences?

Goodness, lili777, what a situation to find yourself in! I’m Seenie, and I work in Moderator Support at Ben’s Friends. I don’t have TN, but one of our other team members may have some insights for you. This is, though, a very busy time of the year in a lot of families, so please be patient in waiting for others to reach out.

Relax, and make getting used to being waited on your project for a few days! Your family, I’m sure, is relieved that you are home with them instead of in hospital.

Take very good care try to enjoy the holiday season as much as you can.

Seenie

@lili777 I am just over 2 mo the after surgery and I had BERY bad hearing loss and echoes a month after surgery. For some reason I still feel like fluid is going through my ear when I blow my nose. I know weird. It I hear it. 10 days after surgery I was still super deaf so I wonder if you give it time. My surgeon wouldn’t even consider doing a cat scan to rule out csf leak til after 3 weeks post op but my symptoms started to improve. I also had fluid coming from ear. I been having double vision episodes and honestly am afraid to say anything cuz i felt like the np thought I was just a hypercondriact but anything I told her was legit happening. I’ve had about 5 double vision episodes and one at work! I been thinking about making an eye dr appt just to rule that out. I don’t feel like I have a leak or anything but worried me when I read that. I rarely get headaches but also drink A LOT of caffeine. For some reason I’m still on meds cuz I’m still having pains in still left wondering when they will go away!
