Corneal numbness

I had an MVD Feb 4th, 2014 and have right side numbness. According to Striking Back there should be no corneal numbness but I can't feel what is going on with my rt. eye. I have a viral infection that is causing me no pain but affects my vision. Has anyone else had a problem similar to this? I am getting some sensation back in my face but not all the way yet. and Does anyone know why a person is likely to get an out break of cold sores after MVD?

I do suggest you send a message to RED LAWHERN, he is our site expert. I know he can answer better than I on this.

Desert Dweller,
I would contact your neurosurgeon with your concerns or your family doctor.
It could be all related to the viral infection and not the MVD. ( other than the numbness)
Hope you feel better soon, (( hugs)) Mimi

Hi, I suspect the V1 branch was damaged during the MVD. This would explain the loss of sensation in the cornea, I had a trigiminal rhizotomy and have no feeling in the cornea. You should be very careful as you are now susceptible of developing neurotrophic karatitus, and this could lead cornea transplant . I would make an appointment with a neuro opthemologist and have him/her follow this issue. I had to have my eye sewn closed for over four years to save it due to this problem and required five plastic surgeries to repair the eye lids after the eye was reopened. This can be a very serious complication. You are the only person in twenty five years who mentions cold sores after MVD. I too had these after each procedure (7). This has been very confusing to my doctors, two different neuro surgeons at Johns Hopkins felt that the herpies vercellous virus may have been the root cause of my problem instead of nerve compression. There has been some studies done on this but nothing definitve Discuss these theory's with your drs. If this is the cause of your problem like me they will continue to plague you. A course of anti virals may be beneficial but be prepared for the doctors to all agree on this . Write back if I can give you a more entailed history of virus related TN. Cheers. Joe

Hi,

I woke up with complete numbness after my MVD, including my cornea. The numbness has remained constant and permanent for me, I have to wear glasses/sunglasses if I leave the house because of the risk of debris getting in my left eye. I am also prescribed artificial tears, not because I don't create my own tears, but to lubricate and was away anything that might be in there without my knowledge. My Dr warned me that monitoring my eye for any sign of infection was really important, so I do my best.

Hi Nikki,

When was your MVD? We have up to 2 years for our nerves to improve. I sure hope yours do. It was very scary to have absolutely no feeling on my right side. Eating was a problem and not really much fun. I use artificial tears also for the same reason. I have gotten a lot of feeling back but I will never be back to normal. I have constant tingling on the right side of my tongue, Pills disappear on the right side of my mouth only to get rediscovered when they dissolve and taste bad. I have tried to wear some eye liner but eye make-up scares me as it can get in my eye and I would never know.

I mentioned that I had a viral infection in my rt. eye. I took antivirals and thought it went away but it came back so I took more meds. I think it is gone now.

Let me know what is going on with you. Where did you have your surgery? What state? Thanks for responding to my discussion. Jean
