Bilateral TN - Multiple Sclerosis

Hi Everybody,

I was wondering for those of you who have bilateral TN, have you been tested for MS and if so to what extend? I have now been told be several Neurologists that an MRI with no signs of MS is sufficient and no further tests will be made to exclude MS unless I show other neurological signs for it.

Also: Does anybody know how it is possbile that we have facial pain on both sides of the face at exactly the same position at the same time eventhough there are two completly separate trigeminal nerves?

Thanks for your replys and I wish you all a painfree week!

Hi,
I have bilateral ATN, but do not have MS. I had MRIs and a spinal tap to rule out MS several years ago. It is thought by my neurosurgeon that my TN is a direct result of an Arnold Chiari Malformation, which is a structural abnormality which cause the brain to slump into the spinal cord. In my case, this would explain my having TN on both trigeminal nerves.

I also have bilateral TN, but do not have MS. My left side was type 2 with constant and stabbing pain in first and second branch.Had MVD on left side and am doing much better on left. The right side is type 1 with stabbing pains in 3rd branch, using only a topical cream for pain at this time. My niece does have MS and TN, so MS is always in the back of my mind but but my MRI was normal and I have no neurological signs of MS.

I too have bilateral TN.
Right side is TN1 and left side is predominantly TN2 and some TN1.
I too had MVD on my left side as it had become resistant to meds. I still have TN pain but at least now the meds help.

I have never felt both sides of TN at the same time. Only one side at a time.

I was tested very thoroughly for MS as I had other neurological things going on back in 2002, the time I was initially diagnosed with TN.
Including MRIs and spinal tap.
The only symptom I still have is hand tremors and occasionally leg weakness.
