Does anyone experience tooth pain with their GPN, especially back lower molar? Also, is your pain constant 24/7 everyday?
Hello portland72 ,
I am suffering from trigeminal neuralgia and glossopharyngeal neuralgia. Yes I teeth hurt, it is as if somebody pulled up and the pain is terrible!
Have vou toothache when you talk? Me, and yes even when I'm in crisis.
Feel that your teeth are so ill that you are in pain? Me, yes. I have not seen a dentist and dental problems.
Neuralgia causes these horrible pains. I think other people will tell you.
One last thing, the pain of your teeth you extend it to the ear?
Courage, I send you all my moral support :-)

Thank you for your reply. Do you have tongue pain and is it constant?
What does the tongue pain feel like?

Does your tongue hurt as well! Explain your tongue pain.
Yeah I have a mild stinging burning sensation in the back of my tongue right where my throat starts,it’s the size of a penny , on the right side of my tongue closer to the bottom my throat feels like a acid reflux feeling all on the right side only .same with the tongue almost like I bit it the night before It’s bare able but reminds me of Chinese water torture .I don’t have Gpn I went to a brain surgeon after years of ent ,oral surgeons, cancer center thinking I’ve never saw a Neuroligist yet had surgery for eagles syndrome in 2010 while it helped I still have chronic symptoms so went to the brain surgeon with that I said I had eagle syndrome still have symptoms can you check me for glossopharyngeal neuralgia he said yeah ordered the brain MRI then he pointed out the compression to me on the MRI supposed artery lying against my nerve I jumped at the chance for surgery thinking I found the answer but woke up from the Mvd being told They didn’t find the compression but he removed a lot of scar tissue I tried to stay hopeful but living with the fact that I had brain surgery for no reason sucks my neck is extra stiff and I owe $5000 I’m gonna try a pain management place soon still chasing the dream lol you on Facebook you should add me
What’s your last name of name on FB?
It’s Ian Deleon out of Irvine have you ever had your carotid artery looked at I might go that route to I’m starting to wonder if the swollen lymph node feeling is something wrong with that artery since the ct I have got show nothing wrong with the lymph nodes
Would the carotid artery cause severe tongue pain??
I will have tooth pain occasionally. I do hurt 24/7 in my ears. Both, since I have bi-lateral GPN. I am currentlyon 200mg Nucynta ER. Along with several other to supposedly help the pain. I still have the pain, just tolerable. At times it may feel excruciating but my medicine will kick in and I keeps me from crying. My pain is generally in my ears but at times I will have a molar to throb or a coughing fit. The need to clear my throat, although I don't really have to. This condition sucks! I have had several surgeries and still hurt as bad today as I did 3.5 years ago. Best of luck to you.
I don't know but I set a appointment to get a ultra sound of the carotid artery on Nov 8th Ill post on here if something food comes from it
ment good lol Im just flying blind on this though
Yes, I have now had most of my back teeth removed , that was a big decision for me but so glad I made it as it was the right decision for me. A few weeks later all the pain I was suffering from has virtually gone and I have
been able to drastically reduce the nerve pain drugs I was taking. In addition,my throat also " opened up" again after weeks of being able to eat nothing at all without suffering intense pain and I was able to swallow and eat normally again as at best, before this I was only when I was able to eat, able to eat mushy food using the right hand side of my throat only otherwise intense pain happened. IMy oral and maxilla facial surgeon who removed my teeth informed me that infection from teeth can cause irritation of the glosso. or trigeminal nerve etc and be the cause of GN and TN. I am hoping and praying this was so in my case given the MRI scans I have had have revealed no reason for my Glosso.N. Hope this helps or is of interested to all GN suffers as the pain you suffer from GN is horrendous ( I could not even swallow my own salvia without screaming because of the pain and was totally unable to eat for 5 weeks and unable to speak either due to the terrible pains I suffered). Best wishes to all GN suffers.
Useridsandy,
Did you have pain in your tongue?
I wouldn't say I exeperience tooth pain with mine. However, my jaw does end up aching terribly which I think is more part of referred pain. I think I would be visiting the dentist and getting that tooth checked out as it may be separate from GPN.
I did not have TOOTH pain until after a root canal . Prior to that my pain was just in the mandible , maxilla and palate ( later it went to my ear and eye ). After the root canal I suffered the torments of the damned for a month in the root canal tooth. Ever since then It is the most problematic area . I use Lidocaine in so many forms on top of my prescription meds. Topical anesthetics help for some reason. I use an over the counter product for dental pain that has Benzocaine in it on the tooth that hurts and it gives additive relief . Ever two months I get an injection with Bupivicaine and steroids at the pain clinic to help that pain . They cannot ablate the nerve b/c I would be left drooling . My dentist has advised me to NOT get the tooth pulled as he has seen other patients have many teeth pulled and then they find out it was neuropathic pain and not a dental issue. I am interested in hearing that some one had a good outcome from a dental extraction…I am just afraid of suffering again like I did after the root canal. Regarding the question asked I think the lower molar pain WOULD be 24/7 without the injections at the pain clinic
I have it all over the place and down my throat and into my jaw. I think tooth pain is trigeminal neuralgia.
Trigeminal will generally affect more teeth, not just one. There will also be pain across the jaw, forehead or eye. The pain in the teeth or jaw tends to occur when one chews, brushes their teeth etc. Or if something touches that part of the face, even wind can trigger it.
If it is one tooth only, it is more than likely the tooth itself. Also the pain would not be constant. If it is the neuralgia it will be coming in bursts, which can go 24/7, but the bursts will be on and off during that time, not constant. If it is constant I would suspect it is the nerve in the tooth itself.
Try placing clove oil (tastes disgusting but works) to see if it numbs it. Or try viscous lignocaine oral gel. If it stops the pain it is probably coming directly from the tooth itself. Regardless you need to see a dentist to have it ruled out as your nerve in the tooth may be exposed.
My trigeminal neuralgia will run around my gums, find several teeth and bang on them and occasionally hit one particular tooth like a jack hammer. I agree with Kaz though, see a dentist but call ahead to be sure they have some experience with it.
Kaz, I thought jaw and eye pain is GN?
No, mainly TN for jaw and eye pain, although there also is occipital neuralgia but the pain with that is upper neck, back of head and behind the eyes. But given you have jaw and eye pain plus pain running around your teeth it would definitely be TN.
Have a look at the nerve distribution in TN in the picture below.
GN is throat, tongue and deep in the ear, sometimes you can get pain right in front of the ear near the tragus and that is where a short branch of the nerve goes, but mainly you'll feel that pain deep in the ear.
It is the distribution of the nerves that tells where the neuralgia is coming from. Although sometimes one can get referred pain.
Thanks Kaz, that is wonderful clarification!
