Tips to prevent or alleviate TN pain or TN attacks without using medication or medical procedures?

I know that there will be many tips that TN members know to prevent or alleviate TN pain or TN attacks without the using medication or medical procedures.

I have Type I and II TN and I've figured out a couple of tips myself, but being a newbie to TN, I really want to find out more first to lessen my pain without looking at going on serious medication once again. I would be keen to hear of any that are not textbook suggestions too.

Thanks

Lissa

I tried a couple of things recently with a physiotherapist, she did some stretching exercises with my jaw and advised me to keep them going. She also took me back in time to the drama of the appointment which I believe caused the TN and I replaced this horrible memory with an improved memory of how i would have liked that appointment to have gone. This did not help.

On my next appointment she held a gadget which harnessed the magnetic and electric fields around the site of the pain. After that appointment my tn2 is 80 to 90% improved.

I am due one more appointment, she says I wont need any more appointments after that.

I know none of the above has scientific backing, and it may have been coincidence or the placebo effect but I do feel so much better since I had these appointments.

To be honest I dont understand what she was doing, but I knew it would not make it worse as she was not touching me as such.

I am open to anything that may help but I am not silly and I would consider myself not to be easily fooled.

TN1 was in remission before this appointment but the TN2 bothered me on a daily bases, My TN2 was mild compared to many others on the site but it did bother me on a daily bases and now it is so much better.

Elaine , how who you describe your TN1 from your TN2 ? i mean what are the characterstics of your TN1 and those of the TN2 ?

i counsider all of my prob. as the same one. even if i have a "Buning sensation most day" and then from time to time stubbing pain etc... i consider it all from the same problem. had the right nerve/infection fixed- my problem would be solved. but interesting to know from you.

also - if you could please share more of this device.

and by the way - all those pshycological stuff.. and replacing one memory for the other - in my opinion (and sorry for the words) - is bullshit.

this pain has nothing to do in terms that "talking sessions" would solve. it can only decreases the pain - as in any pain that comfort and company can help.. but it's all "Stealing time" not really curing the problem. in my humble opinion. be glad to hear about the device.

keep the improvent going. i'm glad for you.

I dont know much about it Nir, I think it has something to do with EMF (electric magnetic fields) she uses it on various parts of the body depending on the problem. She said she was changing the EMF fields of my pain. If I read this I would say load of rubbish, but I can vouch that I have much less pain since it was used. I can now touch my problem tooth without it hurting me.

My TN1 was as if I was plugged into the mains and someone switched it on and the off. When it was off i was normal when it was on, i was being electrocuted in my face - scale of 9.

My TN2 was almost everyday, on and off through out the day, nagging, aching teeth, burning temples when I lay down and sometimes eye ache and tingling tooth and tingling below the eye, but this was only on a scale of 3.

Now it is 0 or a half when i get tired. I know this does not make sense because if a nerve is injured how can this help? But this is my experience.

P.E. M. F I googled it and this is the treatment I had. I would not want to give anyone false hope concerning this or waste a lot of money on it, as maybe my discomfort was ready to stop anyway and maybe it will be back tomorrow, but I had to share it in case it really does make a difference.

Red dare I ask! What are your thoughts on this?

Eliane - i don't think it's rubbish. it does make sense (and i've had doctors here in Israel who offerd me treating like that. and also - if the pain is some kind of frequency - it's "logical" that maybe changing that or "messing" with the "frequency" can help.

it's like with the injections i've done. since them 3 weeks ago - i still have hellish pain . it never stopped. but someplace in my mouth that pain is less. i can also touch my tooth sometimes now without it hurt so much. (but i have other terrible pains instead. so it's no comfort).

again - it does make sense - espically if it's a nerve. (again - since the logic isn't known- we can't determine what makes sense or not).

good to hear - please r e p o r t !

about your TN2 by the way - i can relate to that very much. first my pain was just in my mouth/ear/jaw/throat. now it's also in my left temple. left eye.

BUT when i think of it - i had sensitive left eye for years - but nothing really PAINFUL . maybe it's all connected ?

also - when lying down - it's like the pressure from lying down climbs up and crawling to the face and starts the pain. sounds familiar ? i sometimes have to get up in the middle of the night.. walking.. because of the pain of lying down.

Nir My Tn2 has never been as bad as yours. I think mine may be Neuropathy from a nerve injury and maybe yours has been injured more then mine (this is just guess work on my part trying to make sense of it all) I have a work friend who has TN2 from dental work and hers is much worse then mine and it is 24/7 she has suffered for 8 years. I am going to tell her about this therapy and if she tries it I will report back to you all.

This afternoon I have read up on this treatment and it and it seems to mention bone injury more then nerve injury (although nerve injury does get a mention)

My TN2 felt as if my temples were burning if I put that side of my head on the pillow, in the early days before Amitriptyline i was unable to put either side on the pillow. Now I can sleep on either side again. Keep Well Nir, research is being done for Neuropathy as many people suffer from it in all different parts of their bodies. I have great hope that there will be new treatments within the next 10 years.

Elaine - thanks for ALL your support in all this.

the "not being able to put one side of face on pillow" - is VERY familiar (i guess for many of us). it has changed during these two years.. on somedays i can sleep on one side - and some days it immediatly increases the pain.

for me- even lying down makes pressure on the spine-jaw and i feel the pain "crumbling up" . i think in our condtion even a 3-4 level pain or annoying feeling which lasts all day is bad enough.

i also has that burning senstation of the temples.. below the eye (left eye always) and side of my left nose. but this feeling is the least bothers me. less than the mouth pains. the last period i've got this burning senstation at the back of my neck ...i think that's what people with tension migrane feels like. burning is the word. burn and pressure.

good night for now

again - keep the reports of

Nir I will keep you informed if the effects of this treatment lasts (if indeed it was this treatment which helped) I will also try to encourage my friend to try it and give you the feed back if she does.

Reiki --- search on here - have had very positive results

Also - not mentioned on here much - but a lifesaver to me - found in the Striking Back book

Lidocaine cream or patch on face - ahhhhh just topical

Thanks for your replies Elaine and Nir. I note that Sheila W started a discussion "Share your "little" helps with us!" on 31 March 2011, which gives some useful everyday tips. So I'm covering old ground really. Howver, you never know what some members may have found useful since then.

I had tried alternate treatments from the norm my first time around with tn.Cranio sacro therapy, macrobiotic diet.they did help in reducing my meds it seemed and might have helped even more but I didn't have the patience and opted for gamma knife surgery.Pain free after that but it came back 2 years later with a vengence.Ice pick in my eye plugged into a wall socket type pain that lasted for enough time to contemplate suicide.Another operation could leave me blind in my right eye .I didn't want to do the meds anymore .What a life!.

Cliff I would love to know exactly what the miracle herb med is for I will be in California in a few weeks!!!

It's the only thing that worked for me and I've been maxed out on all the drugs and gamma knife surgery.I'm very happy with my life now. Good luck Muffet!

Cliff -
would you care to say the name of the herb - so i can maybe benefit to all of us sufferers ? (alough i'm aware there are many commercials in this area)

Lissa - i think it's a good idea this thread. new "tips" are always welcomed.

Kc - is you pain external ? i tried lidocaine - they made me a special cream to put IN the mouth (with katamine and some other stuff. didn't much help. only a bit. but it felt "uncomfortable").

Thank You Cliff. I seem not to be suffering as much as some… yet I would like to know what tthe name of this miracle herb remedy is.
???

A chiropractor here in Switzerland found a knot that helped me be pain free for 3 years, I have also tried Osteopathy there seems to be a direct link between the first cervicle vertebra and TN pain. But for the moment I am suffering once again and so far none of this is working, but I have not given up. Just do not want the meds for the moment.

Dean, I dont know what the devise is called. I had my 3rd appointment with her last week. I said I wanted to share it with you all here and she said good the more who know about it the better but then did not tell me what it is called. I have googled it and can find info on it, but I guess there is more then one sort about. It seems it can help with all sorts of healing, not just nerves but bones too. Seem too good to be true I know. I am still pain free. I get it for a second and then it goes away, I told her this and she said it is my brain remembering that it is all ok now. Can I say again, this is mild type 2 not type 1 which I am talking about.
