I added tegretol to my medicines with the intention of increasing it and decreasing trileptal. I started on Friday and for two days I took l/2 pill. I realized I was supposed to take l/2 pill 3 times a day so I did that on Sunday and then took 2 pills today. I have not decreased my trileptal. I suddenly had some really bad pain and it seemed like I was on the verge of an even worse strike. I didn’t talk or move. I managed to get through it but I am using caution and not talking much. Has anyone experienced an increase in pain with tegretol or did my TN just suddenly worsen? I really want to try tegretol and stop the trileptal but I am concerned about taking another pill tonight.
I just introduced Trileptal to my “cocktail”. Taking 450mg 2 times a day. I have been using Lamictal as well and notice some decrease in total pain. I think I get about 3 hours of releaf through the day but the pain is slightly less intense as it was when I started.
Took about 4 weeks for the side effects to subside, but the nausea hasn’t. It sounds like you don’t have any “Emergency” medication. I’ve thought about MMJ as an emergency but I’m too scared to try it with all of the combos. You should call the Doctor and see if s/he might have any suggestions.
Thanks Mike
What I didn’t understand is how I could get worse by adding another medicine. But that is probably just TN. But the pain was so much worse. I do have some tylenol 3. I loaded up this afternoon. I really shouldn’t have taken as much as I did and drive home. I won’t do that again.

I have oxydose (basically morphine). It seems to help nuke out the pain and makes me feel “normal”. Seems like I have to add more about every 30 minutes. Seems like pain always increases when adding another medication.
An update.
I didn’t think I could have increased pain by adding tegretol. Apparently it is possible that the tegretol may interfere with the levels of trileptal and tylenol. So that is probably the reason for my increased pain. The resolution is too ramp up the tegretol faster. But I decided not to try that not only because I’m scared of the pain I had and also my hands have begun to have jerking movements. I’m sure it is the tegretol and that is on a low dose (300 mg/day) and I haven’t taken it since Monday night. So I guess I’ll try the doctor’s next choice which is baclofen. But that won’t take care of the memory issues and sleepiness I am having with the trileptal. I’m not sure what else he may want to try.

Sorry that it didn’t work. Have you considered marinol as a backup in case the tylenol 3 doesn’t work? I feel like there should be some kinda emergency pain medication in case the normal one doesn’t work. I’ve thought about keeping a backup in stock, rather than running to the closet balled up in the fetal position.
Hope things get better with the new medication

Liz,
I don’t ask why we are here, though I’m grateful!
So many questions - “since Monday night” is one?
Be careful on the “ramp up”, just me and the Tegretol thing.
I’ve had no issues with Baclofen.
I’m scared, also. bob
Nancy,
I know what you mean. I am making mistakes at work. I sleep every time I lie down. Liz

Hi, I was taking tegretol and it helped the pain but I was so tired and basically an idiot.I switched to trileptal and have more energy and it helps the pain. I was suppose to take the tegretol and trileptal at the same time then wean of the tegretol. I didn’t want to take that much medication so I weaned off the one then started the other. I have pain attacks that break threw both drugs. That is my fault I guess because if I take enough to kill all pain I can’t work. Good Luck
Hi Bob,
I may try baclofen. I just hate to add another medicine and my goal is to stop the trileptal. I think that is the one affecting my memory and causing confusion. That was the reason for trying the tegretol instead of the trileptal. But The hand jerking is bad so I decided not to try the tegretol by increasing it. The hand jerks would be worse, I think. I may make an appt and ask him if that type of thing gets better.

Mike,
I keep my pain reliever on the coffee table and my night stand. I can’t wait for the time when I don’t have to have it beside me.

I wish the same thing. I have to carry it with me everyday. Even when I go for a walk. The times I have forgotten it have been the worst times for me. I need to find something new, I’m starting to get too used to the Oxycodine.
