This morning I was quietly sitting watching the Tour de France that I had recorded from yesterday. The phone rang and before answering I checked the caller ID and it was from Vancouver Coastal Health, my wife works for them at a hospital in the Sterile Processing Department so naturally I thought the call was for her. I answered it expecting to say hang on while I get me wife but to my surprise it was for me. It was the office of my Neurosurgeon asking if I wanted my surgery this coming Monday. Phone calls like that always catch you by surprise and your trying to process it while the person on the other end is waiting for your reply. My surgery was scheduled for sometime in August so July was no big deal but I was really prepared for August.
I quickly deduced that there was no big difference between July and August and I've been waiting this long, so lets do it. The person on the other end told me to stand by my phone and she would call me right back. At 12:15 she called back and said for me to be at the Pre-Admissions at Vancouver General Hospital for 13:45. Even using public transit I was there with ten minutes to spare.
This is the second MVD for me, the first one being done at the Manitoba Health Science Centre in Winnipeg. I found the Pre-Admission here at VGH to be a little more in depth and included a detailed hearing evaluation the same as done durning the MVD surgery.
So all my Pre-Admission is done and I just have to call VGH on Sunday to find out what time I have to be there to prep for surgery. I'm a little more anxious the second time around because the first time was like a little vacation to Winnipeg. This time its right here in Vancouver so no vacation and I'm really hoping that the second time around will see me free of the awful condition that has been part of my life for well over ten years.
You will be in my prayers. Good luck to you, pain free soon!!!!! Keep us posted on the surgery.
Good luck...I will be thinking about you for Monday....I really hope you are pain free after surgery.....x
I am home from having my MVD and taking it easy. I can’t thank enough the surgical team led by Chief Neurosurgeon Dr. Gary Redekop and the two other neurosurgeons and all the others involved in my MVD procedure. The care and compassion shown me at Vancouver General Hospital was outstanding and attributed to my short stay.
I am now dealing with the affects of the surgery itself and associated tiredness. This being my second MVD in three years is not as easy as the first time but with good rest it will be fine.
The Teflon from the first procedure had compacted and the artery was transferring pulsation to the nerve. More Teflon was added and the artery was positioned well away from the nerve to end the neuralgia. Hopefully this procedure will return me to a normal pain and drug free life.
Oh I am soooo very pleased for you...I have been thinking about you this week...and really hoping that things would go well for you....I wish you al the very best and may you enjoy life to the full being pain and drug free xxxxxx
