Successful MVD's

Hi Everyone,

I'd like to discuss a positive situation for a change ! I'd like to hear from members who have had successful MVD's surgeries. ( if they're still on this site) I'm going for a MVD consultation next month and would like to hear some experiences I guess the bad ones too.

Thanks, Rick

I had MVD 2-1/2 years ago with a good pain free outcome. It is a long and difficult recovery. Look at my posts for more details. I’d do it again because I have my life back.

Hi Tripper

I am 2 months post surgery. I've had no GPN pain so far, surgeon say's it should not come back.

The down side is the side effects, I lost hearing in my good ear, I have trouble swallowing and I have vertigo now,

Surgeon warned me of possible side effects. But I had no choice. Surgeon says it will be a year before things

return to normal.

Be sure to ask about side effects.

Good luck, I hope all goes well for you.

Rick - I had MVD surgery 2 !/2 years ago and have had not problems since. The recovery took several months, but was worth every minute. I would not go back to the pain or change my decision to have the surgery for anything... BUT, I had total confidence in my surgeon and knew that going ahead with the pain I was living with was not worth it.

Hey Rick

Read my story as it is too long to go into here but I am 10 years post MVD and although I do have vertigo when looking up or down (even when not very high) it is a very fair trade as opposed to the pain attacks, or living on Tegretol.

Tripper - this is Caroline again. I did have something to add. Right after surgery I did loose hearing in the ear at the surgery site, but Dr Krisht had warned me of that and it was very short lived. It lasted about a week. My head was also numb at the surgery site for several months, but as the nerves have regenerated, the feeling has returned. For me those were small exchanges compared to living w/ the drugs and the pain… Dr Krisht was wonderful!

I am 6 years post MVD and completely GPN pain-free. I remember having lots of headaches following the surgery, but that settled down after about 2 months. I also had an odd sensation similar to having water in my ear (strangely on the opposite side of my surgery) for several weeks, but that also went away. I had some numbness of the skin around the surgical excision, but the numbness has diminished over time and is only mild now. It was an extremely successful surgery that really gave my life back to me. I know not everyone has such good results, but considering how bad living with GPN is, I think it's worth the risk.

Hi Michael,

Glad to hear that your pain free. I tried to locate your full story on the site. How can I find it ? I would love to read your full experience. How bad is your vertigo and how do you deal with it ? my knowledge of vertigo is your surroundings are spinning around you. I had it once for about 3 or 4 seconds I had to stay against the wall to keep from falling. Do you get attacks or do you have it 24/7 ? This MVD requires much thought, starting to get me nervous !!!!!

Hey Rick

Hit onto my name and then at top of page hit My Page. My story should be at the bottom of the page.

The vertigo only occurs if I am on a height looking down, or looking upwards, say up a stairwell. It does not occur ordinarily throughout the day. It really is a small price to pay for being pain-free

Only you can make the decision to go ahead with the MVD, don't let anyone else sway into doing something you are not comfortable with. At the end of the day, you have get as much information you can so your decision is an informed one.
