Silly question regarding trauma of lots of pressure during tooth extraction

Hi

I have a weird question but I have to ask, because if we cant ask strange questions on here, where can we ask them. For those of you, who started having TN symptoms After a tooth extraction, did the extraction process seem unusually violent, for example, more pressure than you would anticipate, or did your head kind of jerk back and worth?? Now I am wondering if the actual unnatural movements of the head during molar extractions for instance, causes slight shifts in the nearby veins/arteries near the TN ganglion base? Just a thought. Because these symptoms don't usually start from any old tooth pulling, they start after Molar extractions where more force is needed. I have not given up trying to figure out what the heck happened during my molar extraction that caused so many things to go awry(on both sides of face) Thanks for putting up with me folks, this will be the last question regarding the WHY of things, atleast for a while, I promise, lol. Blessings to you ALL! -Elvera

My trouble started two days after having a tooth filled. That's what we call it in Australia but I'm not sure if you share the terminology. I always assumed that it was the injections he gave me to numb the site that did the damage. The timing fits.

I had an upper molar extraction by a regular dentist who struggled and it was jarring for both of us. He worked for 45 minutes to get it out and I remember him sweating and I was miserable. Violent is an appropriate word. This was 5 yrs before tn presented (that I remember). It may have helped the stars align to send me down this road. Later, before being diagnosed and medicated, I had a second molar extraction but this time by an O/S. It was also quite difficult but at least I was in competent hands. Recovery on this one took over 1 week which I thought was quite excessive. Great deal of pressure with both.

Hello,

My symptoms started after a horrible bottom left side wisdom tooth extraction...The dentist tried to pull it first but told me he had to drill it into three pieces and take each piece out at a time...It was definitely a forceful extraction...After that incident I went to an oral surgeon for the rest of my extractions..I also had an infected root canaled tooth extracted and it left a dent in my gum where it sat for a long time before a dentist "agreed" to let me have it pulled..I think the infection did alot of damage to my gums and jaw...

Absoluely forceful! I had to be knocked out ahead of time,

I knew he was sawing on the bone of the sideways embeded wisdom tooth.

The dental assistant was white as a ghost when i woke up… And there was freakin blood running down where they pulled the IV.

I believe i had a whiplash - type event during this oral surgery.

Even though i had no neck pain

I was in ER within 24 hrs.

I have to say i have braced for 7 rearend crashes… All needing pain meds

Lucky me!

i think my brains got allll shook up that day.

But as RED says… Many of the population has the genetics for this to happen…compressions, sitting ducks i think

But only we here had a trigger pulled somehow.
. And some get it out of THIN AIR,!

It took me almost TWO

years to let go of the PTSD,

Stages of grief

Round and round

blaming the asshole…

And I’m a damn therapist! LOL

thanks catwoman. Yeah, same thing happened to me. On my left side I had an upper molar extracted and now have pain and numbness in one tooth and pain in jaw on left side and 6 months later , I had what should have been a simple upper molar tooth filled in the upper right molar, and for me it was exactly 5 days later, I had pain and electric shocks on about 5 teeth on the right side that lasted a month at the time and went away for a while.. I asked for 2 shots in each dental procedure, and yeah, if all this is caused from getting to much novacaine and the amount was to toxic , I will be so mad.. such a simple mistake and it is messing up my whole life... Thanks Catwoman... I have been meaning to respond to you for so long now... I had posted something about being angry and you left a really touching reply how, I should vent and it is o.k for everybody to vent and be angry, and it was so sweet, it made me cry,,,,, but in a good way.. and I wanted to get back to you and tell you this, but then I started these dang meds and it turned me into a zombie.... so I forgot about it..

wow, shadow 2, 45mins??? that's crazy.. I think they are supposed to start cutting the tooth into sections after trying for a couple minutes to get it out in one whole thing.. well, if it makes you feel any better, I had my tooth extraction from an oral surgeon and he still gave me nerve damage... I am so mad at myself because he came highly recommended by a trusted dentist and after he gave me nerve damage I went online and checked his reviews and they were all horrible, saying don't go to this oral surgeon, blah, blah... it was the one time I went to a dr. and dentist and Didn't check reviews first...

Hi Kc Dancer :) I knew you would come on board to this discussion, lol... Oh, that's good that it took you 2 yrs to get out of the ptsd.I don't feel so bad now.. I am at the 1 yr point, so I guess I still have one more yr to go... I knew I had some sort of ptsd going on, when I go to the dentist for a cleaning recently, or for just xrays from a endodontist to see what is going on with all these painful teeth... and both times I think I am feeling fine... and then.... I sit in that dang dentist chair that reclines back, that is when the tears flow... I feel right now that I will be cursed with freaking out all my dental professionals for the rest of my life by crying hysterically on cue of sitting down in that dentist chair.. I didn't know about that theory that Red talks about.. that we just were the lucky ones that had the trigger pulled so to speak..... anyways, yeah, we therapists are slow to learn, lol... what is that sang?.. we teach what we most need to learn.. that's true of myself at least .well, I am getting a major lesson on the importance of coping skills that is for sure.... always a pleasure speaking with you Kc :)

I hear what u are saying Stephanie about having to wait until the dentist agrees with pulling a tooth....I too, had to have a referral sent to my oral surgeon for this latest tooth I wanted pulled (that I since have changed my mind on).. my new oral surgeon basically told me he wont pull it unless it is o.k, with my dentist and he needs it in writing via a referral to pull... I was thinking, and I almost said but didn't... "ah... last time I checked I believe I am the owner of this tooth, yes, lets double check here... yes indeed, it belongs to me... shouldn't I be the one who approves it being pulled or not.???."

The whole dental thing just makes me so damn angry!!!! The last time I had to go for a filling (on the other side) I asked the dentist to please refrain from touching the other side because I have TN and was having a painful day. He threw his head back and laughed. LAUGHED!!! "Who the Hell told you that??" he asked. I told him when I was diagnosed. "By a Neuro?" he asked "No? Well you probably don't have it then." It's almost as if they take no responsibility at all for what they do.

Oh, and Scared and Angry Gal? Thank you!!!

wow, what a total ass hole that dentist was. Yeah, not only do they not know what they are talking about many times, but they say their nonsense with such Confidence, that's what is really annoying.. I was at one dentist recently and we were discussing whether or not we should root canal one tooth of mine, and I stated, "well, now I am kind of afraid of root canals to , because I have read that you can get nerve damage from them as well, if the dentist over fills the tooth and the filling runs out the roots or something. He goes, "oh, that's not true, even if there is an over fill, you might have some irritation for a couple days but then you would be fine"... I didn't argue with him...but I was thinking of all the folks on here who say their nerve damage symptoms started after getting a root canal done... Dang, I wish I were in a profession where not only will I not get fired if I massively ruin peoples lives, but I wont get sued either...
