I was just wondering if anyone has gone through a Partial Sensory Rhitzotomy where they cut the nerve completely. The motor nerve is not cut so no loss of movemen, just sensation.. I know that your face will be numb on the side where it was performed and there is no going back once its done. But also there will be no more pain just numbness. I believe I could handle numbness alot better than this pain. Also, I wanted to know if you could still get Anesthesia Delorosa once that nerve has been severed. I would appreciate anyone's input on this subject.
Hello, Donna. I have TN as did my mother. She had a rhizotomy where the nerve was cut. She had a some numbness. I am no expert, but from what I had read, the procedures were the nerve is cut, burned--whatever, tends to be more temporary. When the nerve regenerates, the problem is worse. That was my mother's experience as well.
As for the numbness. . .have you had experience with it? Not what you might think. To me it is like a permanent itch you can't scratch. You should search through this site and review the posts from those who have had procedures. If you haven't read the book, Striking Back, please do. Very detailed information about the options available to TN patients.
Hope this helps.

Hi Mary, I was afraid someone might say that. But I thought once the nerve was cut that would be the end of it, I didn't realize it could regenerate itself. No, I've never had any experience with numbness, just the pain. It sounds like maybe you've had this procedure yourself. I've heard alot about this book. That numbness that you're referring to must be the Anesthesia Delorosa something that is worse than TN right?
Donna,
I have not had any type of procedure. I did have numbness as a result of a procedure on my leg, but it eventually corrected. I found it very annoying, though. I am only telling you what my mother experienced after her rhizotomy and what I have read. I hope others on this site who have actual experience will respond. I DO know that the first neurologist I saw was against the procedure. I strongly recommend continuing your research. Coming to this site is a good start as well as the Facial Pain Association website.
Take care.
Mary
