Post MVD - will I be up for visitors on Christmas Day?

Hi guys

I’m due to have my MVD on the 18th and I should be out of hospital on the 23rd. We had planned to have my parents and 14 YO niece round for Christmas Dinner prior to finding out when my date was.

My partner is due to cook Christmas Dinner for us and my 16 YO son and my question is am I being unrealistic or wildly optimistic to wonder whether I would still be up to having visitors on Christmas Day? My thinking is we will be eating Christmas dinner anyway would it tire me out too much to have people in the house with us for a couple of hours? I won’t have to do anything and they’d be fine if I only put in an appearance for a couple of hours and then took myself back off to bed.

I know everyone has different recovery experiences but for those who have been through it do you think you would have coped with this 7 days on from your op?

Many thanks for any replies and a very merry painfree Christmas to you all x

Hello Nixy!

Of course, you should be able to have anyone and everyone over for Christmas...if you don't feel well, then it will be TTFN.

My MVD recovery was that I was up and about, nearly ready to run a marathon after 48 hours. Matter of fact, the Physical Therapists were having to play catch-up with ME!

Wishing you all things good and sending you my best, bob

You will do fine with it just your parents & niece as long as you aren't the one having to do anything. I recently had my MVD done a week before Thanksgiving. I rode in the car 20 minutes to go to my FIL's house for Thanksgiving lunch & did fine. I did fall asleep for an hour after we ate though! I'm at day 25 post op and have been totally shock free since waking up from surgery. Life is slowly getting wonderful again.

All my best for a successful MVD,

Judy

Each case is individual, Nixy. It will be delightful if you are up and about two days after an MVD, but I wouldn't count on it if I were you -- or at least, I'd suggest that you not stress yourself with expectations, either your own or others. It's kind of a "one day at a time" deal... So monitor your own reactions and sensations, and don't push if you don't feel up to a romp.

Go in Peace and Power,

Red

I had my MVD on June 16th, went home on the 18th. I was tired and out of sorts, but I would have had no problem having visitors after 7 days. Come to think of it, we stopped at a farmer's market on the way home from the hospital (at my insistence!). I had some problems walking but only because I came out of surgery with persistant double-vision. I just hung on to my husband's arm and walked from booth to booth. I had no TN pain, for the first time in 6 years! I bought some luscious organic peaches and bit into it without any shocks, zaps or stabs. Best peach I have ever had!

Just don't over do it. You will find you get tired easily, so let everyone wait on you. You deserve to be pampered, after all!!

Good luck, and may this be your best (pain-free) Christmas ever! Suzanne

I think you will be fine to have visitors. As long as you can just relax on the couch. Remind them that you will be out of it..proably will still be on meds from MVD.

Good luck & Merry Christmas!

Thanks everyone, those replies were really encouraging! Now all I have to do is persuade my mum I won't be at death's door and that we'd still love them to come spend Christmas Day with us :)

Hi Nixy, I noticed you had the MVD surgery ? I am scheduled for minds in Jan 6

Were did you have your surgery at?

I am from Cleveland Ohio but is going to Pittsburgh Pa.

Did you have to wash your hair in a certian shampoo before surgery?

Thank you

Diane

It’s different for each person, I’m sorry your’e having this done so close to the holidays…the less stress the better. I had MVD on 8/9/2010 and due to complications I was admitted for 2 whole weeks. My surgery was not successful unfortunately and I still continue with the bilateral pain. After I left the hospital it took a month to be able to attend family functions comfortably. Thanksgiving was difficult and I payed for being at the family function after. I do wish you the best with your surgery and know that it is a surgery with a extremely high success rate, 90% of patients are able to be pain free after. A supportive family that knows what your post-op needs and limits are…make all the difference.

Happy Holidays and God Bless

Hi Jessica
I’m so sorry to hear that your operation did not go as planned, I hope you’ve recovered from the procedure now although I am very sorry to hear you continue to be in pain. It must be soul destroying when you’ve actually gone through with such an invasive procedure to find it hasn’t worked. Thank you for sharing your experience, this is why I am not gung ho about being able to do anything straight away as you just never know.

Wishing you a pain free Christmas and New Year xx

Hi Diane

Not had it yet, due on Saturday - only 3 more sleeps - it’s like counting down to Christmas but not as much fun
I’m actually in the UK so I know certain things are different here - for instance we are in hospital for 5 days whereas you guys seem to come out a lot more quickly. I haven’t been given any advice about shampoo so I would imagine that you can use whatever you normally use.
Good luck with yours!

Hi Nixy, how long have you had TN? I am going to be saying a prayer for you right now. I so much wish you the best.

Hi Diane I've had it 3 years and have run the gamut of every drug there is available - I'm currently on 3600mg Gabapentin and 300mg Phen

I think 7 days out you should be ok.

I had my MVD on Aug 20th and was out of ICU after 2 days and only spent 3 days in the hospital

Just make sure you dont overdue it.

My neurosurgeon didnt want me lifting anything heavier than a plate for 2 months-so easy does it for a while

Rick

Hi Diane,

I had my MVD surgery last June. I didn't have to use special shampoo, but they will tell you that you can't color your hair for 3 months after the surgery. I decided to embrace my gray streaks as a badge of "honor" HA! Good luck and try not to worry. The fear of surgery is probably worse than the surgery itself!
