Patterns in ATN Pain

For those with ATN: Does anybody notice a pattern in their pain with regards to time of day? Does anybody feel it is worse with stress or when tired? Just curious.

Hi Sharon,
Mine is time-of-day sensitive - the farther I go into the day, the more likely it is that the pain will start, and is most always there by noon.
And yes, stess will ramp mine up like a humdinger! Also, if I try to push through it, it will rapidly escalate and and land me on my on my back.
Hope this helps,
Lily

Yes, yes, yes!

My pain is worse at night and stress causes more pain. Also, stress, wind, and being over tired are my worst triggers.

Mine sometimes progresses throughout the day, but most definately responds to stress and being tired. I just finished a course of steroids and they kept me awake at night. I think they did more harm than good because I am exhausted. I worry about Thanksgiving. 14 people at my house. I may be miserable.

Yes by evening my pain is always worse, I try to do things in a morning. Stress is a trigger as is tiredness. How you are going to cope with 14 people I don’t know, you must let them help, and try to stay calm. I can’t take cold winds, and noise sets me off, could be because of my deafness. We don’t celebrate Thanksgiving in this country. So Christmas is my next worry. If I don’t get anough sleep my pain always seems to be bad the next day. Best of luck Sharon try to enjoy the company. Margaret

Survived… Got bad about an hour before serving dinner… I took a break, read in a quiet room… had some whiskey…

Yep - I find I need to control my stress and get as much sleep as possible. Wind, cold and vibration (like a really long bumpy car ride) seem to be triggers for me…

Help yes stress and tiredness are my worse triggers, wind as well not quite as bad though. And if I have had a stressful few days I can get through this stress without much pain but as soon as I relax boom in it comes with a vengeance! Thinking if you all out there!

Mine gets worse through the day too- am not sure if it's tiredness, everything I've done during the day taking it's toll, or because I take my amitriptyline in the evening, so maybe that's wearing off. Glad you got through Thanksgiving.... Christmas next!

Hey! I haven’t noticed a time pattern but definitely being tired and stressed have triggered it. Also chewing and laughing.

Hello,

I have finally figured out after 12 years and an application on my phone that helps me track pain and triggers, that stress makes it SSSSOOOO much worse for me, as for the time of day yes, the most intense stabbing/shocks happen early morning until around 3pm for me. . If you have an android phone, You should download "Managing Life" it is a pain tracker with all sorts of options to customize for you. It also has ability to print all sorts of different reports. It is the best app I have ever downloaded. I ended up buying the pro because it is that good... Good luck

Yes and yes. Stress and being overtired are huge triggers for me. So is weather and my cycle. I am generally pain free when I wake. The pain comes on gradually and starts freaking out in the afternoon and evening.

I am happy to hear there might be a way to track the pain. I have tried Journal keeping but with a young child it’s tough to keep it up. I can’t seem to find a pattern. However, stress is a huge trigger and weather shifts as well. Cold wind is my nemesis! I will definitely be looking into the app. Thanks

Considering the trigeminal nerve complex extends to the upper neck and can cause trigeminal neuralgi, I find it somewhat incredible that more folk don't investigate it more thoroughly. Do they listen to their neurologist that more often than not tell them that the neck doesn't cause TN, or their neuro believe it doesn't so don't give it a mention? There are people on this forum and others even after failed MVD who have gained relief from physical therapy of one sort or another, even cervical/ neck nerve blocks from neuros.
We hear of dental procedures precipitating TN which are none invasive, i.e. just teeth cleaning. Succesful MVD's then resulting in a return of symptoms due to keeping one's head out of the water whilst swimming ( this forum), thus compressing the neck structures, not dissimilar to the dentist's chair. Multiple folk suffering neck pain in addition to TN and being told not uncommanly referred from the face, but it doesn't occur the other way round? despite numerous coexisting problems in the TN patient; other head/ facial neuralgias, headache complaints- migraine, occipital neuralgia, TMJ, sunct, all of which can have a neck issue to boot. How many patients does the neuro actually see with TN given the low incidence? Can serious cervical/ neck pathology cause TN? Sure, is the neck routinely examined on radiology examination MRI and other, no, it should be. As it isn't how can a patient make an informed treatment decision if it is ignored? Especially when your neuro options are drugs or surgical procedures from said specialist. Your neuro, I believe will refer you up the tree but rarely down the tree to a physical therapist, why would they when they don't consider the other end of the trigeminal nerve complex as a cause? which ultimately could be a non invasive treatment option.
There are cervical/ neck disorders which are not readily treated by physical therapists, but the neck should always be considered as a cause prior to invasive procedures.

I, too, find that not getting a full night's sleep and stress are triggers. I often have to pace myself throughout the week and plan "nights off" where I do absolutely nothing.

Mine increases throughout the day. It also worsens quite a lot with low pressure weather systems.
