Pamelor

I just starting taking this for nerve pain but used to take at 50 mg for something else I had a hard time peeing. I was on Elavil which I stopped because the it was making my pain worse and Elavil is supposed to urinary retention worse than pamelor so I cut the Elavil to 30 mg. Does this side effect happen at such a low dose? If it does will it just go away? I’m weaning off the Elavil I’m only at 10 mg today then tomorrow I’m off of it. I really feel pamelor can help with my pain but I don’t want to have my doctor to up gabapentin to 3600 because I swear it does not help

Side effects can happen at any dose and at any change in dose, be it up or down.

General rule of thumb would be to give yourself between two and four weeks to adjust to a new dose then assess where you are, assuming the side effects aren’t serious or severe.

Thank you for answering. My biggest concern is urinary retention but I’m fine right now and I’m on 20 mg. I know on 50 mg the therapeutic dose it takes me 10 minutes to use the restroom I’m not ok with that but I believe this is the answer to the pain.

I think you will adjust and it won’t be a problem. Go up slowly and take the lowest effective dose. Good luck, hope it works for you!

Thanks. I’m only staying at 30 mg. I have had some of the urinary problems already. They aren’t to bad but Ziggy I think your right I think my body will adjust because it’s already helping. Last night I was finally off the Elavil!!! yay but I don’t want to go back to it. I’m on triliptal to and only 75 mg because that’s plenty enough for my nerve compression. I need a tricyclic three times a day because my pain spikes during the day so darn much. I just want my whole lower face to be numb. It won’t happen but the meds do numb them up more than they are

Decided not to do this anymore. This morning at 30 mg I could not use the restroom and decided to take an Elavil I had on hand and took it and within an hour I no longer had the urinary retetention. I really believed it would my pain but my bladder is more important that it work then the stinging god awful pain in my lip

Have you tried peppermint essential oil or the Salon pas patches along the jaw line?

No but I have benzocaine at 20% it works 40 minutes which I’m surprised but I talked to my mom about the medicine. She thinks I have a bladder infection and I’m on azo and it’s working so I’m back on the med and see what happens

Is Azo a prescription medicine?
if you think you might have a bladder infection-maybe you should get that checked out.
Would be great to be able to stay on a med that is reducing your pain.
I was up all night with mine.
Finally took some meds at 2AM and that just kicked it back a notch until morning.
With the weird pimple outbreak on my chin I have not been using as much of the topical stuff as usual.
But it does give me a break.
I have a great prescription topical with ketamine-but it seems the peppermint oil gives me more relief. But if the peppermint is causing the zits I will have to cut back. Two weeks before the new neuro and a couple days before my thyroid biopsy.
Who knew this could happen?

i can take up to 25mg without urinary issues, but when I go higher it starts. I’d like better pain control, but the urinary side effect is just too much.

I think I may. Never crossed my mind but I wanted to go up to 30 mg. Now I’m not having any urinary issues on 20 mg. This was to replace my elavil which I hate

I wonder if once this urinary episode is resolved,if you could increase very slowly the meds?Since it works-then going up at a snails pace might work.Like the extra 5 mg once a week to start and then the next week twice a week.?Just ideas.I know it is frustrating.

I agree, I think that your system will adapt over time, if you can raise the dosage very slowly. Start at a dosage that doesn’t cause undue problems (even if it is not complete pain relief) and work up slowly from there. Stop at the dosage that works for you–no reason to hit some dosage that a doctor has labeled as optimum–everyone is different.

I would also be sure and drink plenty of water so that you can avoid any bladder issues, not pleasant!

I’m getting relief at 20 mg. I only want 30. I’m taking the azo and drinking my 12 cup of water a day which seems to be helping. Ive never had a bladder infection before so I don’t know if I have one but it seems like I do and I need to go to the doctor for it

I did some research on the urinary retention on this med. if you take muscle relaxants, benzodiazepines, and anti convulsants it makes things worse. I’m on all these and most of us are to. I research everything
