Pain after surgery

I started out with TN last year, and tremendous pain every night. I went on gabapenten to relieve the pain, which it did for awhile, but every day I was totally dizzy, sleepy, and very hard to work.

I called it Pain, Pill, Loopy

I decided to have surgery after talking t two people that Had surgery by this one doctor. I awoke with a numb jaw, and have been like that ever since, totally numb jaw.And now the pain has returned, but not as severe, and I have been able to take two Excedrin to relieve this pain, but is coming every evening, and a little more severe each evening.

I visited my doctor for a post op visit, and he stated that this is normal, and it takes months for the nerve to heal itself, and numbness, and minor pain to go away.

I saw online an article from Colombia University that basically stated that if you have numbness, and pain that surgery was a failure.

I attempted to contact the doctor who performed my surgery, but was told that he was not practicing any more ?? which I thought odd, and there office referred me to another surgeon from another office.

Can anyone shed any light on my condition

From what I have read on this site, your doctor is right. I had a MVD 6 weeks ago today. I am still on very low doses of the meds to give the nerve time to heal. I don’t have numbness, but have felt faint pain from time to time. Others on here report that their doc told them it could take up to a year for the nerve to heal and things to settle down. Some have reported having numbness that never went away and consider it a small price to pay for relief from pain. Hope this helps… – Juliet

I had my surgery at Columbia last yr and that it not what I was told During recovery. It is normal to have pain and numbness after the surgery and this in no way means thst surgery is an automatic failure. It also doesn’t necessarily appear to be nerve related if you’re having relief from excedrin- pain meds typically do not relieve nerve issues. Are you on any meds now? It took me 5 months to be weened off of my anti seizure meds. I did not have any numbness is my jaw but had some on my head. It’s been a yr and I still have some numbness fr behind my ear to the top of my head. I had terrible nerve pain immediently after surgery but it disappeared after 24 hrs.

I'm sorry to read you are in pain, never had surgery myself but even after completeing antiseizure meds course I felt something like pressure on my jaw and mandible for some time on the side affected by neuralgia. Try not to worry and contact someone you could discuss things with in calm and positive atmosphere. Think positively and have hope for the best outcome possible.

Hi

I had My Surgery 2 weeks ago I have TN1 TN2 Burning pain with Electric.

I'm getting around and doing things ok I still have pain. Searing in the lower jaw area. Feels

Like an attack will come on at any second but then it subsides.

I Had my surgery done at Johns Hopkins Baltimore

I had a lot of the headache pain &still do but not as bad. I am using Excedrin and Tylenol now. Its helping. I have some numbness on the ear and in my head around the ear. It's only been 2 weeks this coming Monday so I'm sure it will subside. I'm still experience some burning but not as much. I guess is all one day at a time and each person is different.

Some days I'm a bit depressed feeling Like I didn't get the instant relief that some do and then I just Have to hope for whats to come.

Did your doc offer you maybe steroids for the nerve maybe its inflamed? I don't know just an Idea. My MRI showed My Nerve was inflamed there also was an artery compressing on it.

I hope that you can get some answer soon keep your chin up !!!!

Have Hope
