I had my first TN attack two weeks ago. It was after a surgery of my arm, and I think due to trauma During anaesthesia. Now I need Neurotop Retard, same as Tegretol, but it stays in the body a bit longer, so I only take it twice à day. I started with 150 mg à day, which is two quarters of à pill, and TN was gone the day after. But 10 days later I could feel some pain around my teeth, so I now take 225 mg a day. Will I need to take more and more? Right now the side effects are very low, I feel a bit happier ( strange since I should feel sad about having this disease ) but I think worse side effects are present with higher doses. What is à normal dose?
Welcome Beata Boo, I am sorry you need to join us here...but it is wonderful that you found this site...very helpful and informative. I also have Type I and have been working at getting under control for a year now. Seems I am a newbie compared to many of the members here.
I am also on Tegretol retard or Carbamazepine CR here in Canada. I started like you on a low dose and was thrilled to be free of the pain only a few days in....but as the days went on....the pain increased and so did my need for more drug. I am now up to 1300 mg a day. Pain is not to bad most of the time...side affects are manageable :(. From my reading the max should be 1200 mg. Some take less and a few take more. Everyone is different. Depends on how your body handles the drug.
I'm sure you will get many more replies to your question. I hope you find the answers you are looking for. Best of luck!

Hi Erin, thanks for the reply! Do you think your pain got worse or the medication became ineffective? In my case, I had pain attacks for three days and I really can’t imagine anything worse. But then I am new on this… Good tio know that you get by on medications though. They help me right now.

Good Morning Beata,
To asnwer your question is a difficult one. I have been wonder that alot over the last year....more pain? or less effective drug? Hum? In my careful analysis of my own pain...something I feel I dwell on it far to often....pain is constantly on my mind(face) :) I think the pain is getting worse ...it is changing in intensity and duration. Not to scare you as you might read everyone is different...althought dealing with the same monster and have similar inital symptoms. Please excuse my typos.
I wish you luck on this journey! Feel free to ask me or anyone whatever you need. Knowlegde is half the battle.
