The doctor started me on oxcarbazepine. I will take 600mg in the morning and 600mg in the evening. He had me stop the carbamazepine but stay on the gabapentin. I start the oxcarbazepine tonight.. Please let me know if anybody has been on this, how long it takes to start working and if it worked for you.
I was talking oxcarbazepine a few months ago. It seemed to work along with my pain meds (norco I think). I can’t really say how long it takes to work since I took it for about 3 years. But I’m practically pain free at this time.
I was on it, before I had MVD surgery.
Hundreds here have been on it..... its also called Trileptal
You can put either in the search box here and read for hours.
I think it took just a few days. It worked for me, but I HATED the side effects.... its similar to the one you are getting off of.
I had to quit my job because I tried three meds and each made me too foggy and sleepy and couldn't work.
Along with, or instead of upping your meds call the doctor, any doctor or dentist and have them call in for you
Lidocaine patches for face
or
Lidocaine cream for face
and/or
Lidocaine for mouthwash
to take the pain way down for many
Dancer is correct. Trileptal has been around for a while. According to the International Association for the Study of Pain, it is probably the best tolerated of all medications used in chronic face pain. There is an acclimation period of several weeks for any of the meds in this class (anti-seizure meds used off-label for neuropathic pain).

Thank You for the replies. I will talk to my doctor about the Licocaine. Which is the best? The patches, cream or the mouthwash? If I touch certain parts of the right side of my face it sometime sends me into orbit. I can not even wash the top and sides of my hair because it hurts a lot and sometimes sends me into orbit. Please advise with all of your guys knowledge.
Thanks Sandy
If you can't eat - or hurt inside mouth get mouthwash
If you want real good relief - and don't mind wearing white patches on your face -- it works for up to 12 hours. Just not too close to your eyes.... you cut them up into little or medium pieces of where your pain is
The lidocaine cream can go on your scalp and around your hairline.... or maybe try patches in hairline - just not in hair -
So I wore patches mostly at home, sometimes out, but used cream if going out to something where I CARED about what I looked like --- have to put it on every couple hours.
it is clear
So where ever you need - order which ones would help! Some have 1 type of .lidocaine, some order all three types.
Just decide and call your nurse -- no appt. needed for this!
It is a common medicine for TN. My understanding is, it is a newer version of Tegrotol.
I take a low dose of Oxcarbazepine and it does help the pain. But I’m having serious difficulties with memory loss, spelling and major foggy brain.
I hope you have better luck with it
Thanks for the reply. When you started the Oxcarbazepine, how long did it take for it to start working? I started it on Thursday, Feb. 13. I take 600mg in the morning and 600mg in the evening. I am just curious because I have had a bad time with pain since Thursday. I was also wondering if the weather has a lot to do with it. It has been snowing and the pressure outside has been dropping.
I hope one of these days I can have some good advice I can give to other people instead having to get advice.
Like I said I am so glad to have found this site.
Thanks, Sandy

Hi,
I was on 1200 mg of oxcarbazepine along with two or three other medications for five and a half years. It provided good pain relief, but I experienced nightmares while on the medication which it why I stopped oxcarbazepine as the nightmares became too bad. I definitely think the medication is worth trying and I hope it works for you.
can I ask what your low dose is? I took 300mg of it for 3 days and I hated it... had stomach flu like symptoms with it and to tired....
