MVD = Live with a metal plate in your head?

http://www.tsa.gov/traveler-information/metal-implants

I was told titanium mesh would not be enough to set off the airport security. Next time I fly I plan to follow the information on the link provided.

I have noticed there has been a lot of discussion as of late about scars, hair, etc. To me it seems it's just more vanity because I would never sacrifice any of those for the pain relief I now have.

I was told the same thing about airport security but thanks for the link!

I could care less about my scar at this point too, the only thing I seem to have a lot of is itching in the area? have you experienced this at all?

My plate is Teflon. I've seen it on Xrays. It has capital Ts (for Teflon, I suppose) all over it. Mine doesn't set off the metal detectors at the airport. I can feel it, but it doesn't really hurt. It's just there, protecting my brain. No big.

I have titanium in my jaws on both sides. Titanium does not cause the airport monitors to go off, generally. Now, if other substances are used like cobalt, chromium, etc., it will set off the airport monitors. Titanium is a "soft" metal so they harden it with other metal alloys like mentioned above. If you have minimal amounts of the other metals, it will not set off the "alarms". I have NEVER gotten stopped due to the titanium jaw joints. However, I have a friend who had two titanium alloy knee replacements and he does set them off. So, it all depends. So, he probably wants you to have a letter to be on the safe side. Lots of people are hypersensitive to cobalt and chromium so they can test you PRIOR to surgery to be sure you are not hypersensitive to it. A company called Orthopedic Analysis out of Chicago does it for alot of orthopedic surgeons. Hope this helps some.

I too am investigating MVD and my NS said a titanium mesh is inserted and I would need a letter to get through airport security. Fun, eh?

OMG the itching is driving me batty lol I also live in the cold tundra so I think that causes some aching along with the occasional zaps of my nerve coming back to life. All worth it, even the first night of puking;)

I didn't know they could use Teflon for the "skull-cap" as I call it. For some reason I was under the impression that the teflon that they used in MVDs was spongy. But maybe that's just they put inside the brain.

So wait, there's Ts on it on your x-ray that you could see? That's pretty cool. I don't know why but it is. LOL I wonder if you could see the serial number too.

I didn't really look close enough to see a serial number. The Ts made me laugh though.

The plate I have is about the same size around as a baseball. It's not very thick. It feels like hard plastic...maybe it's hard plastic covered with Teflon? I can't remember what the doctor told me.

I also have the Teflon disk separating the vein that was wrapped around the nerve. The doctor told me it was kinda felt-ish. That's spongy. I guess that Teflon can come in lots of forms.
