Just had my nerve block...question?

So I just had a nerve block into the trigeminal nerve and the Dr said I would be numb for a few hours such as when you go to the dentist. But I have no numbness at all…does that mean the nerve was not hit correctly? Anybody else been threw this? Thanx

It sounds like he missed. I had a dentist give me a shot of novocaine near my tonsil when he was doing some dental work. It was four hours of bliss.

What was the name of the nerve block?

Oh I see it is a steroid nerve block.I have had a spheno ganglion nerve block twice and both didn’t work.

What’s the difference?

More importantly, has it helped?

He said I wouldn’t know for a few days, that that’s how long the steroids take to take effect. I will keep everyone updated!

He also said I might need a series…some people it last hours some weeks some months some one shot knocks it out for good. That everyone is different. So we shall wait and see! Hoping for the best! The spot is getting pretty sore now

Was the needle inserted through your cheek while you were awake? Did they tell you the name of the procedure?

Know pain yes threw my cheek while I was awake. They didn’t give it a name other then a nerve block and that it was steroids.

Nobody has any experience with nerve blocks?? Find it hard to believe…any one out there? Hello lol

There are some active groups on Facebook if no one is responding here. I know of some members that have them but they might not be around. I hope your nerve block brings you some relief Jennifer

Hi Jennifer, all the things your doctor told you are the same as my doctor told me. I had the 9th steroid block( over 4 1/2 years)on the left and first on the right about 2 weeks ago. Most of them have been successful on some level. I never know if it will last weeks or months (twice, a series of 2 blocks that were 2 weeks apart lasted 11 months!) Every single one has been a different experience for sure. All had numbness except for 1 and surgeon repeated the block the same day. He didn’t really say that he “missed” and I didnt challenge it. He has always tried a slightly different approach (injection site) when he wasnt satisfied with the duration of the last block, he’s always hoping for a better outcome this time. He has to try to block v2 TN pain, ATN in my upper teeth/ tongue and glossopharygial neuralgia on the left side. Im under general anesthesia for about 15 minutes. He is very conservative about how many he will do within a years time (2, maybe 3 if I’m desperate!). It may not be the right answer for most but I’m not a candidate for MVD so I’ll have them done as long as they are effective on any level. Sometimes just waiting them out ( pain usually continues to subside for a week to 10 days) is a challenge. I still have some fairly intense “pinches” on the left at times but otherwise I’m not complaining. I’m eating, drinking, laughing and brushing, I’m happy!

I so hope sharing my experience helps you in some way. Please keep us posted and best wishes to you!
