Inflammation causing TN

Hi everyone,

I have not been here much at all lately. Sadly my nan passed away last month and I was caring for her a short while beforehand.

I had an MRI scan in May. I wasn’t due to see the Neurologist until September but he asked to see me this Monday.

He showed me my scan, and pointed out a white patch which he said was inflammation. He said the inflammation was in the same area as the trigeminal nerve and he thought it was this inflammation pressing on the nerve causing my pain. He is going to discuss the scan with a colleague in London and then would be back in touch with me, and I will need more tests.

He then said that none of the surgical options would be available to me. It will be a case of controlling the pain with medication. This information did not properly sink in until today. As you can imagine I’m very upset at the prospect of living in a drug-induced haze for the rest of my life. He increased the Tegretol to 1600mg and I can increase to 2000mg if I need to. He reassured me that there are many more meds out there but having already tried Oxcarbazapine, Gabapentin, Trileptal, and the slow release Tegretol with limited effect this didn’t fill me with confidence.

I just wondered if anyone here had been diagnosed with having TN caused by inflammation, and I would also appreciate your thoughts on this matter.

I hope you’re all having a pain-free day,
