I had a Gamma Knife procedure performed 6 months ago for Trigeminal Neuralgia. I still have the pain which feel like a toothache especially at night. Now six months after the procedure the left side of my face feels like I have had novocaine and my tongue and lips feels like they have been burnt. I get a sharp pain in my left temple and the numbness radiates over the entire left side of my face even up under my eye and my nose. Has anyone had a similar experience since the procedure? It is very depressing.
Hi-
I am having the same expereince since having gamma knife 4 months ago. Have had mostly burning pain since the procedure and now have developed very bothersome numbness whole left side of face, including around eye area , nose, cheek, chin and jaw as well as one side of my tongue. I was treated at a center that uses a very high radiation dose, 90 gy, and that dose has a high incidence of numbness as a complication. I would caution anyone considering gamma knife to proceed with caution, and don't expose yourself to more than 70 or 80 gy. Not much that I can do to deal with the numbness. Also, I sought the advice of another neurosurgeon recently and he does gamma knife as well as endoscopic MVD--pretty much confirmed that I was atypical and my outcome supports that--also felt chances of successful MVD would be only 50/50. Yes, it is very depressing.
Hi Duster,
I am sorry this happened to you.
