Evidence that Ketogenic Diets can help TN?

Well at this point I want to leave my body to science when I die (seriously) and maybe someone can at least find something at that point that can prevent others from having to go through with one of these things…
It’s been a blast from the past thinking about those medical things!! Lol:)

We are in poorer health than our parents generation. when circa 1 in 30 US children are been diagnosed as ‘disabled’ at school age, and this figure is getting worse with time. These children are our future, and someone needs to wake up soon. In part I agree with sicker due to over informed. I prefer sicker due to misdirection. One day wwithet I do believe that house of cards will fall, reckon it’s changing now but will take a generation plus. There will be a lot of angry parents. The blame diet stress and vaccines. Generation from now will be " we gave our kids 60 odd vaccines, in addition to behavioral drugs", some folk are going down as the stupidest folk on the planet, having been instrumental in managing to do to a population what certain elements have been attempting to do through acts of war/ genocide. A little strong maybe, but someone needs to stop sleeping in.

That’s never occurred to me, Tulips. I’ve considered donating my body before, but it’s only just struck me that you might be able to specify what it’s for? If so, I’d definitely like to donate mine to the study of TN. I must look into this - it’s a great idea!

Yeah, Aiculsamoth, I never used to believe in the vaccination thing; I thought it was just orthorexics getting their knickers in a knot about a new conspiracy theory, until I saw a documentary that talked about vaccination in America. It’s much worse than in the UK, and vaccines seem to be driven by profit, with practically everything from TB to teenage acne being vaccinated against, so I suddenly reaised that yes, you can definitely over-vaccinate children. I still agree with the basic needs for vaccination for serious illnesses, but giving growing children 20 or more vaccines? Absolutely not.

I’ve been doing some research on this and I’m trying to decide if it’s really just ridding your diet of inflammatory foods or actually putting your body into ketosis that is true benefit. Thoughts?

Hi Todd. I think an anti-inflammatory diet is always a good thing, for anybody, but when it comes to treating epilepsy in children, for example, they very specifically use ketosis. The manufacture of ketones (in the brain?) is what appears to treat the condition. I did know how when I first did this research, but it’s a pretty old entry and I’ve forgotten it all! But short answer, yes, it definitely seems to be ketosis which is needed for these specific conditions, rather than just the improved health markers you see with low-carb in unafflicted mortals.

Todd, I think both have an effect. However, ketogenic diets specifically have the unique ability to alter the neurotransmitters in your brain, in my opinion, to a greater extent than eating other types of diets.

One of the main treatments offered for TN and other neuropathic pain conditions as we know are anticonvulsants, acting to slow down the nervous system by affecting glutamate and GABA levels in the nervous system, or their ability to act on neurons by altering other receptors etc. This is the premise behind using a ketogenic diet to treat epilepsy or other neurological conditions. That being said, calorie restriction in itself might also have some effect on altering the amount of these chemicals in the nervous system but I would suspect it would be to a greater extent on a ketogenic diet + restricted calories.
There is also some evidence to suggest that ketogenic diets may provide relief for migraines, by reducing excitability of the nervous system and reduces neuroinflammation.

Those are very interesting, Trout, thank you. I can see now why I couldn’t remember what role the ketone bodies played exactly - they don’t know! It does make me wonder whether anyone has ever surveyed what instance of neurological conditions occurs in societies that traditionally eat a low-carbohydrate diet. It’s a shame we can’t go back and study paleolithic man and see if he ever had migraines, epilepsy or TN!

That happens to me when I can’t eat because the trigger point moves in to somewhere my mouth. so I go on basically liquid diet. After a few days I don’t miss food at all. this lasts about 1 to 3 weeks some time.

I do intend to go on the Kato diet just to experience it.
Thanks for he good discussion.
Si

Hi Si. (That’s a little poem right there!) I have that situation permanently as my TN is actually in my mouth, but it’s up and down as to pain so I don’t have full strength pain all the time. Coincidentally, I have it bad today with near shocks on every bus and in every indoor/outdoor situation - I’ve spent the whole day sucking my teeth. I must look very odd to outsiders as I am gurning all the time!
Do let us know if you ever do the keto diet properly. I’m dying to meet someone who’s actually tried it for this condition - I just want them to do all the hard work so I don’t have to!
