Cataract surgery and TN

Anyone here gone through cataract surgery? I have ATN on the right side and found out today I have a cataract in my right eye. I have an appointment next month for a cataract evaluation and the eye doctor said surgery may be advised. I'm freaking out because of the ATN being on that side too and it's affected my right eye at times. Sometimes the lower lid will twitch for days and I've experienced some stabbing pain in and around that eye.

Any advice???

The doc.was great for my tn side he put me under a local ans. yes I was scaed but did just fine. The left eye was done two weeks later with no problems just a little scared, that was back in 2012 no problems . Good luck to you. Dawn

Hi. I also have ATN. I had both eyes done last year. I had been concerned but the surgery is a snap. I had my right eye done in Feb and the left in March. You are mildly sedated and there is no pain after. I have had no problems. The eye twitching will probably be less after your cataract is removed. Prior to cataract surgery I had thought the TN was partially to blame and to date there is very little twitching unless I am tired or have been reading or on the computer for any length of time. Even though they located a cataract the doctor will wait until the cataract is “ripe” so you may not have to have it removed for awhile
Everything will work out fine.

Hi Chippy,

What you said about the eye twitching being less afterwards was very interesting. I've always assumed the twitching and fluttery feeling was related to the ATN. Thank you for sharing your experience too ... it really helps knowing this surgery is nothing to worry about. With the ATN being on the right side of my face the thought of someone poking around in my right eye was pretty scary.

I also believed the twitching was due to TN. Perhaps a portion is. i also believe almost anything we feel on our skull (I have right sided TN) is nothing but TN. It has a way of consuming us. With regard to cataract surgery I checked the clock prior as I was being wheeled in to surgery and when I was back in recovery it was only 15 minutes. I was also very concerned prior due to TN but that was one thing I did not have to be worried about

Have a very Happy New Year !

Hi Chippy,

"It has a way of consuming us" ... you are SO right about that! Thanks again for your comforting words and all the best for 2015 to you!

Happy New Year to all!

Obsidian,

I hope you will update us if you gain any further information, or end up having the cataract surgery. My mom also should have cataract surgery but is afraid due to the TN that causes sharp pain in and around her eye and cheek, especially when it is touched. There is not a lot of information on this topic online, so I appreciate the question and replies. Everyone sounds positive according to the replies, which is encouraging. I pray all goes well for you.

Thanks,

Peggy

I have had TN for 30+ years. Had Gamma knife

with great success 4 or 5 years ago. Only

one attack recently brought on by an extreme

stress incident. Quickly stopped by a dose of

Carbamazepine. I take 200mg of that as a prophylaxis.

Have had cataract surgery in both eyes approximately 20+ years ago.

Before surgery your eye will be examined to produce a lens for

Insertion that in most cases will result in 20/20 eyesight.

At surgery an injection near the Zygomatic arch which contains

the foramen for the facial nerve. You will be awake but have

no pain. You will see immediately the dramatic results in eyesight.

In a recent discussion with an Ophthalmologist she has seen no

affect of TN directly on the eye. If you have experienced pain in

the eye that is not proximity muscle, let me know.

Good luck to you,

Marvin

Hi Peggy,

I have a cataract evaluation appointment next week so I should get more info then. Thanks for your support:)

Hi Marvin,

Thank you for the cataract surgery info - it sounds like you had no problems with it at all. And you've had TN for 30+ years?? That's great that the Gamma knife was a success for you! I wish you pain free days ahead:)
