Can you Sprain/Bruise a Tooth?

Day 14.

The tooth has got a bit better, but now the tooth is sensitive to hot and cold, more so hot.

I'm not sure if this is just the healing process, or is the tooth left with a micro crack and may not get any better. e.g the tooth will need extracting.

I had a similar issue lately after a filling. Have you tried sensodyne toothpaste? There’s also a high fluoride one called prevident 5000. The sensodyne desensitizes the nerve, while the fluoride can help seal micro cracks.

Day 19,

I'm at a lost, the pain is still coming and going all through the day, sometimes very severe which terrifies me.

The tooth isn't as much sensitive to hot and cold anymore, the pain is very erratic, constant 24/7 ache which increases all on its own.

I can sleep at night, when I wake up there is no pain, but after being up and about for 20 minutes the pain/ache sets in.

To be honest, day 19 seems a little better, at the moment I have a tight dull ache which is throbbing slightly.

I really dont know what to do, it feels like the tooth is not going to get any better, it just feels like there is something wrong, as in fractured (micro crack). But! I cant help wondering is the tooth still healing, will it be 100% in a few more days?

I'm leaning towards the idea that the tooth is fractured, and that I may as well go get it exacted. I seem to be going around and around in circles, even the dentists cannot be sure, which I think is ridiculous... what is wrong with medical science?

Update!

I waited 3 weeks, I couldn't stand the pain any longer. I had the tooth extracted a few days ago, and part of me wishes I never did.

The original tooth pain has now stopped, so this would indicate the tooth must have been damaged. I wanted to give the tooth more time to heal, but the dentist could not be sure if it would or not, or if the tooth was actually dying. I couldn't be 100% sure if TN was to blame, was it making the tooth situation worst, or was the tooth really damaged?

What an awful situation to be in, I have been so depressed these past few days. I do everything in my power to be healthy, but it doesn't seem to matter. I have never smoked, I dont drink alcohol, I have never done drugs. I eat a healthy balanced diet, but I seem to be loosing my teeth one after the other.

It is so upsetting having to loose yet another tooth all because of TN, I blame TN for making me loose so many of my teeth. Once you start having teeth extracted, all other teeth seem to follow due to breaking or damaging them, all teeth are needed, they support one another, and I wish I never started to have them extracted.

I am so sad and depressed, and the UK NHS is absolutely rubbish.

Did pulling it help? I’m in a similar situation. Has the pain moved to a different tooth?

Hi Jennifer, yes pulling the tooth helped instantly, I haven't got the constant terrible pass-out pain anymore. I just hope and pray the pain doesn't come back.

The pain I had was due to me biting down on something hard (soup) must have been a hard bean. The tooth didn't break, but the nerve or blood vessel, surrounding tissues must have been damaged, or the tooth had a micro fracture. I couldn't tell if the pain made the TN pain worst, all I know is I couldn't stand the pain anymore,

The pain I had was a damaged feeling pain, the pain would also crossed over to my right-side. This is where I thought the trauma must be making my TN pain worst, or was it just my TN, and not the tooth. But! because I knew that I had bitten down on a hard object, and this was when the pain got worst, it would indicate I must have damaged the tooth.

I blame early dental procedures causing my TN, the pain was always worst at the rear, on each molar, never the front teeth. When I had my first rear molar extracted due to a failed root canal, this is when the pain started and never went away, the pain locked in and went on both sides at the rear. All my rear teeth would hurt, some already had fillings and others already had root canal work done, so I had to play the waiting game then.

After waiting months at a time, the pain never went. The pain was unbearable, so I had some teeth pulled that had been worked on before, this brought pain relief for a short time. Eventually the pain came back on the other rear teeth, so this is why I dont have many molars left.

I blame my childhood dentist for giving me early fillings when I didn't need them, because that lead to root canal work being needed in my late teens, which has now caused the TN pain and forcing me to have teeth pulled because of the unbelievable pain.

Let us know how the next few days go please. How did you convince them to pull it without evidence something was wrong on xray etc? They won’t here

I wanna pull mine myself!!

Hi Jennifer,

This is how crazy the UK NHS system is, I saw four dentist's in the end, all because I never had a straight answer from either of them (talk about making a situation worst).

All of the dentists did agree on one thing, that I had sprained/bruised the tooth, pain should subside in a few days, maybe a week or two.

The first dentist took an x-ray, he saw a line, but wasn't sure if the tooth had a crack or part of the root structure. He said give it time, if pain gets worst he would do root canal, but he could not guarantee the root canal would work as the tooth may have a micro crack.

The second Dentist could not see anything is the x-ray, said x-rays do not always show cracks in teeth, especially micro cracks. He said the tooth will most probably have a micro fracture and will need root canal or extraction. He also said depending where the micro fracture is, the root canal may not work.

The third dentist said nothing showed on x-ray, that x-rays do not always show small cracks. He said only time will tell if tooth or the tissues are damaged. He said the tooth has taken an impact and is trying to recover. Many times the tooth cannot recover and will slowly dye, then infection will set in and tooth will either need root canal or extraction.

The fourth Dentist had better equipment, he used a probing wand with a light and a camera, he said the tooth had a micro fracture and will need a root canal, but could not guarantee the root canal would work. He said he would temporary start the work and see if the pain would go or not. He showed me the images, the crack looked like craze lines, which is normal on adult teeth, craze lines are not cracks.

I showed the images to the first dentist, I did not mention what I thought. Straight away the dentist said that is not a crack, its a craze line, that is normal. This is where I feel so confused, do not know what to do. I didn't want root canal work, because all the dentists said they was not sure it would work, only time would tell as they could not be 100% sure if tooth had a micro fracture or not. But! they all said they would rather try to save the tooth first before extraction, I was in so much pain I could not go through root canal work again with only a small chance it would work, and the fear that the pain would either get worst, and be faced with an extraction at the end of months of waiting.

The UK dentists are the same, they would rather save the tooth than extract it. I'm not sure if they have the patients best interests at heart, or its all about money.

I like you also thought about pulling the tooth myself, I was that desperate. But! dont go doing that, that will just make things worst. Part of me wishes I never had any of my teeth pulled, you certainly do miss them. But! with less teeth has brought less pain, no pain at times. I feel not having the rear teeth brings less pain for me, I can still feel phantom pain where the teeth were, but the pain is not as bad. I can feel the live TN pain up in my gum jaw area at the nerve endings, but because there is no tooth there, the pain doesn't hurt as bad. Its certainly a very strange feeling, some days the pain gets worst at front of forehead, and will still travel along all 3 branches and give extreme pain.

At the moment the pass-out pain has gone, the pain felt like the tooth was damaged. But! I still keep thinking was the tooth trying to heal, should I had given the tooth more time.

Mines been 10 months and all the dentist say xrays are fine and nothing is wrong

Did the pain just start on its own, or did you bite down on something hard which started the pain?

The tooth that hurts, does it have a filling?

None of my pain started until I took out a bottom retainer which was fixed on for 12 years. Its the bottom pointy tooth mainly and then sometimes the molar behind it. I saw three dentist and oral surgeon an orthodontist then finally an endodontist and he brought up neuropathic pain and that’s how all this tn stuff got started.

Do you feel the pain is due to dental work?

My MRI came back normal, no compressed nerve. Add that to my TN (ATN) pain all started after lots of dental work due to over crowding teeth, failed root canals in the past.

I totally agree with saving teeth, this has been my approach since my teens/early 20's But! I feel this has now caused all the pain I have been in these past 10 years (I'm only in my early 40's).

I believe if I had no teeth at all, I would not be in so much pain, maybe none at all (just the crazy phantom pain). I wouldn't worry about breaking anymore of my teeth, life would be bliss, eating would be more difficult, but a full set of dentures would solve that.

After this socket has healed, I'm being measured for a partial denture. I'm hoping I will get on with the upper/lower, or maybe both. But! people I talk too say they dont get on with the partial dentures, some people say there is the worry of them coming loose and breaking your real teeth when biting, I'm really hoping that is not the case. I'm also hoping any denture doesn't make the TN worst.

Maybe your teeth are still adjusting, settling into there new position.

Yes the pain started the exact night. All my MRIs etc come back fine as well. I doubt it would take almost a year for a tooth to adjust :frowning: whatever happened pissed the trigeminal nerve off or the nerves in those teeth and they just won’t settle down and I’m now stuck with life long pain probably. I also without medication had EXTREME burning on the same side of the mouth

How are you feeling now??
