Atypical Trigeminal Neuralgia From Teeth Extrations

Hello, I have tried so many things I am not sure. I know they switched me from gabapentin to Lyrica. Tegretol sounds familiar. Are you still in pain? My doctors told me they feel that because the pain is atypical and not ATN 1, I would likely have this for the rest of my life. I have been in this pain for over two years now and I don’t know how much more I can take. They have also tried nerve blocks but it only lasted about 3 hours.

Thank you, George, for all of your words on encouragement. I am so happy for what you have achieved. I cannot read a book. I start to read and don’t remember what I just read. lol What doctors have you seen if you don’t mind me asking?

What I have found best is methadone and Percocet

Hi there,

Let me tell you one thing, you or me oe everyone else here, TN or ATN, we have to think one thing in our mind that we will be cured. Yes, we will be. There are very few who are struggling, their numbers are few, many many who got cured didn’t come back. So their % is larger. For ATN and TN, alternative path for healing and remission path is homeopathic path. Check Dr. Shah, Homeopathic from Mumbai. There are hundreds of cases where he has been successful. There is nothing wrong in trying out one more. I have ordered the 4 months treatment. Also Hemp oil and peppermint oil and clove oil mix is giving me relief for good 4-6 hrs. My jaw aches, which is the most irritable and bothering and difficult part. These oil gives me relief from Jaw pain. I don’t know what else i can do. I have tried many medicines, the medicines i take in high doses than normal and get very little help. i think our bodys are super toxicated from different medicines. If we can live all the medicines for two months somehow (somehow i wish) and then start again, it would work better. Thanks Swayam

Hi Swayam
Please let us know how it goes .You deserve health.
We all do.

Good for you! I am so tired of people judging the fact that opiates don’t work. They have in fact worked for me and I have tried zillions of other medicians. I don’t understand why it has become so unacceptable if they work. More recent studies show they do work, especially for atypical pain TN2.

Whether treatment of the cervical spine/ neck made it better or worse, would it not implicate it as an option for treatment? Better or worse implies a connection. Inflammation equates to pain, inflammation is the bodies way of healing, certain physical therapy modalities are designed to increase inflammation and hence promote healing. Drugs often are used to reduce inflammation/ hence healing is slowed.

Which?

Thats some STRANGE science there. Inflammation protects the damaged area site against infection and is a natural mechanism administered by the body, it can cause tissue damage and especially nerve damage if it persists too long. It is all involved with WBC. Inflammation doesn’t heal anything except infection.

When it continues for a long period of time – or is excessive to the point of debilitation – it is called “chronic inflammation.” The body hasn’t figured out there is NO infection. In this case, it can actually disrupts the entire immune function by focusing the immune system on the affected area. This can leave your body more susceptible to bacteria and other harmful outside elements.

Healing is a systematic process, traditionally explained in terms of 4 overlapping classic phases: hemostasis, inflammation, proliferation, and maturation. While platelets play a crucial role in clot formation during hemostasis, inflammatory cells débride injured tissue during the inflammatory phase. Epithelialization, fibroplasia, and angiogenesis occur during the proliferative phase. Meanwhile, granulation tissue forms and the wound begins to contract. Finally, during the maturation phase, collagen forms tight cross-links to other collagen and with protein molecules, increasing the tensile strength of the scar. When it comes to chronic nerve pain at least two of those phases (inflammation and maturation have gone seriously arwy.

Did you have the microvascular decompression surgery?

Inflammation is the bodies way of healing, from a scratch to serious trauma. Scratch your arm the scratch inflames, red weal. Not only does it protect ,it is the healing process.

Inflammation does not only protect against infection, it heals. Any trauma to the body will cause inflammation. Why it heals. Without infection, job done.

With all due, your talking rubbish when you talk of the body recognizing no infection. Inflammation is not just about infection but healing. Most of the systematic process you describe going awry is due to poor intervention.
Inflammation heals more than infection, it heals everything given the tools.

All this gone haywire, it makes no difference, if you continue to think inflammation is not an issue

What’s rubbish is coming on to a forum where bulk of the members are suffering from inflammatory diseases including auto-immune disorders not to mention virtually to a person have some sort of permanent damage and/or chronic pain as a result of inflammatory processes gone arwy.

Even more concerning is a supposed medical professional who fails to understand The four stages of wound healing are:

  • Hemostasis Phase
  • Inflammatory Phase
  • Proliferative Phase
  • Maturation Phase

Until each phase is completed the next phase can neither be started or healing completed. If in fact your profession believes they actually help patients by creating inflammation through manipulation or other means it is no wonder it is no wonder they have the reputation of having patients return over and over for repeated treatments or are considered quackery in most circles.

Of course I may be a bit touchy after recently having reviewed for publication a case of a dissected vertebral artery from a NUCCA practitioner. (Which is why we eliminate all references to the practice here)

Fortunately the surgeons were able to repair the damage and control the inflammation before this patient was paralyzed. Others haven’t been so fortunate.

As this thread refers to dental work, it may be worth noting that part of every extraction protocol requires the use off steroids to control inflammation not only for pain management but also prevent nerve damage from inflammation. Depending on where the oral surgeon did his anesthesia residency, he may even give them IV during the procedure in addition to oral steroids following the procedure.

TJ

I must say that I agree with you regarding the protocol that should be followed . That being said, many oral surgeons, like in my case, followed none, even after I clearly had the signs of nerve damage. It was too late to try anti-inflammatory medications. I was told I now have no options because more than one nerve was damaged. Nerve blocks only helped for a couple of hours. I do have to ask why this is rubbish. This forum proves no such protocol is being followed in many cases.

Admittedly I should have known better, than respond, TJ, to the last.Hmm my bad, but in response;

Apologies to the original poster, this might be off topic.

“inflammatory diseases including auto-immune disorders not to mention virtually to a person have some sort of permanent damage and/or chronic pain as a result of inflammatory processes gone arwy.”

This is me talking as, whatever you want, supposed professional, lay person someone exercising common sense, whatever. The bodies natural response to injury is inflammation, and were not just talking wounds, internal injury even no access to infection. Are you suggesting inflammation doesn’t heal? Inflammation certainly causes pain, and as such is present.

Going back to the wound and inflammation, what is stopping each phase being completed, the bodies inability to complete each phase, and why? which also can be implicated in internal inflammation/ injury; Auto-immune?Why does a person go on to destructive chronic inflammation?

The patient smokes,
The patient drinks copious amounts,
The patient has a diet that makes Ronald’s bonus,
The patient has stress issues on a scale above Red Adiar.
The patient with a G.P. who has no idea on health, thinks it comes in a pharmaceutical pill, and at best mildly touches on the above, before prescribing something that doesn’t address anything but symptoms, and is likely to exacerbate the condition in perpetuallity (not exactly a word but like the sound of it), in addition to side effects, without reference to a patient’s psychi, impact on family, social well-being, and income.

Do the above factors affect health, inflammation and consequently pain??
Without the above your four stages of wound healing would, and often does take a dive, no problem, got a pill for that ulcer!

You sleight UCCA, the ‘medical’ profession doesn’t make mistakes? Had a patient and I placed too much faith in the medical profession. This guy had been to hospital crashing headache neck pain given the all clear by the hospital, his first serious headache ( alarm bells, but hospital all clear), massage treatment, stretching, No manipulation, two days later Hospital dissecting vertebral artery. My fault? Chances are already dissecting, but I took the hospital at their best/ worst. I ignored the scenario, due to the pre hospital visit. Fellow had appropriate intervention. Never again will I take it as read. Maybe your Nucca review was in the same boat. Vertebral artery dissection, whoever at fault does not lead to automatic paralysis. How many bad outcomes from MVD?? or is it OK that this procedure is undergone despite no one knowing the definite cause of TN, just that it, MVD sometimes works, sometimes without catastrophic outcomes? Want to compare physical therapy outcomes for any condition, to surgical intervention? You couldn’t there is no money in physical therapy to warrant meaningful research, who is going to pay for it? Hence the spinal lesion, mainly caused by stress, diet, and posture won’t be on your radar anytime soon despite my making a living out of it for the past twenty years without asking folk back time and time again. Figure it makes more sense to address the issue and have them recommend me to their friends and family.

TJ your well intelligent, but like most medics miss the point, and rely on where’s the evidence. Who cares, when most of it is biased, funded by those with a self interest. Evidence medicine, these days the norm, is only afforded by whom?

To your original question, ultrasound in the physical setting is designed to increase inflammation/ healing. Not read any recent studies, I don’t use it.

You best read up on ultra-sound it used to REDUCE inflammation not create it to promote healing:

http://www.electrotherapy.org/modality/ultrasound-therapy

FWIW my chiro (when I was able to go) always used ultra sound to reduce inflammation after adjustment (and said so) In the hospital it is used similarly especially with tendon tears and sports injuries.

But as I recall this all had to do with you telling us inflammation was a good thing and it promotes healing.

Money? Americans spend about $34 billion annually on alternative medicine. I am not aware of any alternative practitioners who work for free. In fact I don’t know of any who do thousands of dollars of charity treatment on their own. generally its cash up front. Yes NUCCA screws up. In fact enough they had to form their own association as traditional chiropractic usually never touches the atlas-axis area. (I believe you don’t either) Atlas Orthogonal Chiropractic is in the same class. While our rehab centers use chiropractic frequently they won’t let NUCCA or Atlas Orthogonal Chiropractic.

Wellness is all well and good, but fortunately, in this country at least, while good clean living is a part of every physicians training, every cardiac rehab program, diabetes program etc has nutritionists physical therapist etc on staff. The fact is we still think treating folks and attempting to extend not only the length of life but the quality of life as well is as important for those who “clean up their act” as well as those who can’t or won’t. We are not in the business of judging them. But again this issue has nothing to do with nerve damage from tooth extractions or facial pain.

Tried to distant myself from the original thread with an apology, then you state it has nothing to do with nerve damage or facial pain??, think you might be missing my point, but not an issue. Honestly think NUCCA was born out of a promotional/ we’re different, have something more to offer/ marketing drive, over other physical therapies. And no I don’t manipulate the atlis/axis.

Clean living might be part of a physicians training, but in the UK and I’m guessing in the US, it is minimal, to the extent it is barely a mention. A patient needs referral to these staff, and in fairness probably includes practically every patient who presents. It doesn’t happen. As a percentage of their training, my guess, which would be correct is jack. It also takes time to educate a patient in this, those who won’t, not met those who can’t, as opposed to take a pill.

This addition to the thread, does pertain to some extent to the original poster.

Have to read it again, but ultrasound promotes inflammation in order to reduce it at a latter stage

Oh my gosh
My son is in hospital and I am spending all my time in emergency.
I found that the one day that I did not get to go home to change my undies or take my vitamins my mouth was less sore. This morning I took my vitamins and my mouth hurt terrible.
I wish I could read this thread but I cannot right now.
I know there are different ways of describing things.Right now either my son had a stroke or he did not have a stroke. You would think they would be able to see that on a CT scan.
Off topic-I know-but I really hope every one on this board stays as healthy as possible and out of hospitals

Ellen, so sorry to hear that! Hoping that your son is going to be okay, what a nightmare. Obviously you should try not taking your vitamins, and changing underwear for a while (sorry bad joke). Please keep us posted!

Don’t bother reading this thread unless you get bored, it has completely gone into the weeds…
