Hi ive been put on gabapentin due to reactions with tegretol and im now at 1800mg today and increasing by 300mg every 3 days under my GP's (UK) orders, i just wanted to ask a few things from those who have had or are on Gabapentin,
1. at what dose in mg did the pain (type 1 shocks) stop or reduce in severity?
2. also has anyone experienced chest pain? on Gabapentin
I am on 1000 - 1200 mg a day and my only side effects are tiredness and forgetfulness. At this dose my shocks are much less frequent, and most are less painful. The burning pain is another story… GABA doesn’t help it much.
I do believe my neuro said that chest tightening could be a side effect, but it never hurts to check with your GP.
Gabapentin 900mg has dramatically eased the pain. I have not experienced chest pain. I've been on this for about three weeks. I am still learning what activities or stresses trigger more pain. Maybe it will just take time for all pain to subside. I am reluctant to increase the dosage at this point as I've read that gabapentin can cause weight gain. I know I am vulnerable. I would like for anyone else to comment regarding the weight gain issue. Thanks
Before my MVD in jan I was on 900mg a day the very first dose I took I got chest pains
Like someone was sitting on my chest! It scared the crap out of me it did pass about an hour later
My doctor told me to just keep going and if it gets worse then to stop I’m back in it sinc surgery has failed
And I’m now on 1200 mg a day. It doesn’t not help with my pain much all it does it make me sleepy
Good luck
I am on a time released gabapentin now (samples from the neuro - Horizant) and they are 60mg pills 1 x 2 times a day. It has stopped the shocks. Yes some tiredness and forgetfull ness like another mentioned but not bad enough to not function.
Yes, Initially I was on the 300mg capsules, 1 - 2 times a day, but I was getting pain mid afternoon.
The neuro said gabapentin wears off fast, myself I had added another capsule mid afternoon. So he gave me samples of the Horizant to try 1 capsule 2 times a day. I saw they were 600mg tablets.I hope my insurance will pay for them.
Last year he added Oxcarbazepine (generic for Tripetol). So I take the 2 medicines.
No I saw it was hard to lose those til recently I have lost 5 pounds and if the pain stays away I can get back to some exercise I hope.
Hi there, I take 2400 mg gabapentin in addition to 60 mg of baclofen each day. I have never experience chest pain. I also had side effects from Tegretol but don't really seem to have many with gabapentin outside of feeling as if my brain is scrambled, which of course it is. It takes far longer to do the drapery jobs that involve precision. I make more mistakes. Now I fell I have to recheck everything 10 times. Just grateful that I can still work some. That hasn't always been the case with TN. I was on lower doses with control for a long time and 3 months ago went up on dosage. There is information about the medications if you go the Pain Info pages that might help you with other known side effects. It is a process to find what meds work best for you. Hope this helps. Hugs, Sara
