Tomorrow, a local dentist is offering free dental services for the under/uninsured.
I have a few cavities in the top front I would like treated.
I have bilateral TN, and am currently in remission only with some minor pain here and there.
On 1200 of Neurontin a day and 800 of Tegertol a day. Also 30 of Baclofen a day. Have both Norco and Percocet at hand.
I fear this will set me into a crisis. I also fear that no one at the office will know what TN is and not tell me.
I do have to drive myself, so laughing gas is not an option.
Both of my painkillers I function just fine on.
I knew this day would come and am starting to wonder…
I would appreciate any input friends…
Remission is the best time to get the dental problems put right. Do tell ur dentist about ur TN
Red advises safely loading our meds prior to dental work. In the FACE PAIN INFO there are several illustrations of the TN pathways. I print one off, hi light my affected pathways and have a little chat to the dentist. I kind of get him on my side by saying " I just know you would not want to cause me any more pain because everyone here knows just how painful TN is...................". This does not appear to patronize him or faze him. He is ultra careful and has never caused me any pain.I hope for the same for you, all the best.

I too have a couple of cavities I need to have taken care of. But I am so scared to go. They are both on my "good side", but I am so afraid that it will set something off on my good side and don't know what I would do if I ended up with it on both. I have a neuro appt. Jan. 16th, so I am going to talk to him about things I can do about the dentist. Good luck to you!
Under the face pain info tab I think there is info on seeing the dentist. Tell the dentist, print off a picture of the nerve and where the pain is and show him this. Make sure to take breaks while he is working on you, ask if he will do any follow after the appointment, notify your doctors of your dentist trip, and yes you need to dose on your medications with the aid of your doctor.
Also please be careful with any opioids. You feel as if you can function and drive okay on these, but in reality you don’t. If pulled your you can be charged with DUI. Don’t assume you are fine because you feel fine with this group of medication.
I hope all goes well at the dentist for. Have a great day that is pain free:)
I also need to get a small cavity filled on my TN side. I have already cancelled my appt. twice because, quite honestly, I am way to scared to go. I am so afraid that I will end up in horrible pain for days and I just can't bring myself to take that chance. I know the pain can happen regardless, but I don't want to do anything that could make it happen. They know I have TN, but my dentist did say that she really didn't know much about it. Ugh...
Yep...i need some dental work done too; on the "bad" side, but even with the meds i'm just too terrified to even try. I went to three different dentists before being diagnosed with TN, and all three of those seem to think i was "drug seeking".
Thanks for bringing this up; it's something I've been thinking about for a while now.

If I dont do I tomorrow, i have to wait another year, so I cannot chicken out.
I will update here to let you all know how it goes.
Mistee,
You might want to consider seeing an oral surgeon or a specialist dentist. If I do have dental work that MUST be done that is who I see. He knows the condition very well. Another idea is seeing a gentel dentist. The last idea is trying 1.800.dentist. The dentist must be approved by this agency. From the past experience (way before TN, I have a phobia of dentist) these dentist really now their stuff. I don’t know if anybody here has tried them before for finding a dentist that is knowledgable about TN but it is worth a shot.
Lastly the dentist that I do see, has said consider my case of TN it is fine to not have the cleanings all that done. This is my case and my not be true for all. I’ve also heard of others with tn not seeing a dentist for years and years. But don’t skip out on cavities and what not. You don’t want to end up having teeth pulled or a root canal done because of the tn.
Agreed Cleo, I NEVER have a needle now unless absolutely necessary.

there is really nothing to fear about having a cavity fixed. if caught in time its just surface related that should not even require being numbed up for. you dont want it spreading into the roots and end up needing root canal.
Cativity filled and novicaine is worn off. Not an iota of trouble with the whole process.
I am so glad I didnt let my fears get in the way.
Thank you friends for yoyr advice!
Is good to hear you didn’t have any trouble. Now go eat a bunch of holiday goodies:)
